To put it into perspective...

We may argue night and day about whether George Bush is a GOOD president or not...

But nobody can argue the fact that he IS president.

whether or not a tree is a particular species is pretty much matter-of-fact.
Relying exclusively on common names makes it a matter of opinion, not fact.

Correct... which is why I write work orders with the latin included.

But no matter what you call a tree, it still is what it is.

oh this is an amusing thread ,i quote for my work most weekends i feel as though im a travelling education unit im usualy armed with differant littrature mainly discribbing the problems with topping etc i have spent hours with potential clients discussing this issue, and varieous other bad practices ,sometimes i win them around which can be a great feeling ,but i still get the client who looks at me as if im completely mad, if hes determind too top then im sorry guys thats just what ill do unless the tree is real special .when i carry out this horrific crime against trees i usaualy think of the ecological benifits [fungi microrgs ect need a place too live ] but the most pleasure i get is giving sly comments
to the customer on how long it will be before he has too spend his or her money again on tree removal and how this is one of the only proffesions a customer willingly pays for crap workmanship its nice too get the last laugh.but its better not too let them get you down:D

say what?

Rollacosta, you ever been to the dentist? Do you want the root canal and a crown and we'll save that tooth for a while longer or just remove that one? We are not the only ones that try to save things that can be $aved for a while longer for a few more $ than a removal would cost. I have a choice of root canal and gold crown $$$ (save it) or $ and have it removed. The dentist can do a drill & fill $$ on the other tooth. To me they are teeth but the dentist has a name for each one. The last thing a dentist would do is point out that you don't know the name of the tooth a you want fixxed. I don't know if it's me or not but do you think in terms fo how many trees (RED Maples) that tooth going to cost to fix? Having a name for everything lets the proffessional work on the right tree, it's not something that we would expect the customer to know, few do. Any way Husky, you're not making money standing around with the crew idle while you argue with the customer over the name of a tree, you make money working on the tree. Named tree or not you're there to do tree work.
Coffeecraver, I thought it was funny. Like the guy that wanted me to remove those plum trees down on the lower end of his property that weren't worth a darn. He said it must be too wet down at that end for the trees; Can you say "water tupelo".

I thought it'd be funny, but it really just didn't make sense.

Sorry netree. I'll go back to comedy school.

love
nick

According to the arguments postulated by some Democrats "it depends upon what the meaning of IS is".:p

Carl, that pruning for the garden you were planning must be "ventana" pruning instead of "Vista" pruning. You did say you were cutting a window rather than pruning for a view.;)

Thanks stumper.

I knew that it had to have a proper name. Is it pronounced vin-tan-a? Kinda like montana, cept with a Ve in front?

Thanks
Carl

Carl your leg is bing pulled. Ventana being Spanish for window, Stumper is positing a regional subvariation of vista pruning. Vista pruning is still a proper term, but as with common names for trees there's some room for variability.

LMAO... No wonder it sounded familiar.

Been awhile since high-school espanol tho...

Speaking of tree names and cutomers...
Last year I got a job to remove two sweet gums by a driveway...
I was standing with the customer on the driveway and looking at the trees... He said "remove the two sweet gums"..... OK 3k.. deal done.... There was a big sweet gum, then a fair sized black walnut, then a medium sweet Gum.... Big jon took down the Big sweet gum first... it had an old lightning strike...lots of decay... Then he was about half way through the second gum and the customer comes out and says... "HEY... I wanted THAT TREE down"... pointing at the black walnut.....
"Well you said the twoo sweet gums", I replied..... kinda hard to mix the two up as the sweet gums were covered with balls and the trees hadn't leafed out yet... That'll be an extra thousand thank you.....
And it was the first time Big Jon got to see me climb.... fun day. Though watching Big Jon wreck a monster tree makes me think running the ropes ain't too bad...

Could you salvage any walnut wood? I got some pretty boards out of the last one I cut down.
And $4k for 2 trees? Boy I gotta raise my prices!

Thanks for the laugh, Daniel!

Bet that guy will invest in some flagging tape next time, eh?

Took down a storm damaged split maple in my backyard a few weeks ago and after I jumped the top out my wife yells out the upstairs window that I cut the wrong tree down! She said she thought I was cutting the white oak next to it with the peeling bark because in her 'expert opinion'
it looked ugly. My point : it is not only the paying customers who are sometimes a royal PITA. :D

I had my guys go take down a Russian olive that a regular client called in about. Snowloading broke it and she said her neighbor had started hacking on it.

Turned out to be her neighbors tree, after we took it down. We got away with just doing the stump gratis.

I have learned that with the limited knowledge some custumers have with tree ID it is easier to have them touch the tree that they want removed and then I paint a dot of orange paint on the tree. It seems childish but the customers don't mind and everyone understands what tree is to be removed. Trimming is different since the tree is not gone but with removals I still haven't found the right glue to put a tree back together again.

I started the painting thing when I had a large job with a number of removals. Meet with customer then brought him the written quote and a map he then says no that I had the wrong trees marked for removal so I went through them again and painted them the second time. I still think that he took out the wrong trees (left the ones in worse condition) but there was no changing his mind and the others will be coming out in a few years anyway, he is removing chinese elms from property and replacing with better quality trees. He started out with sixty chinese elms on a small town lot, about 10 or 12 left. Property is looking better.
