Has anyone had any luck finding a suitable material for cutting your own filters? I contacted Maxflo and currently waiting for a response. Im looking for somthing in sheets as opposed to sponge. The HVAC stuff breaks down and Im leary of using the scotch brite pads like some people use.

Thanks. Jason.

I just go on Amazon with "foam engine air filters" and a number of them come up and I just pick one that is cheap and can be modified to fit.

ATV service shops have bins full of the sleeve type foam filters that slip over a metal mesh- they take them out by hour clock readings and replace them under warranty of the ATV at "X" intervals- cut to fit and hey presto.

Failing that, I have relined flocked filters that have lost their flocking with the sheet filter material that comes with vacuum cleaner bags.

Search for dirt bike and ATV filter foam. Brands like UNI sell small sheets. I din't know how fine they get since I was looking for coarse at the time. I also use nylon mesh fabric, right around 300 mesh is right for chain saws and flows better than flocked filters.

What about thin wool felt, draped over and glued to one of those "snow filter" winter air filter/screen things?

Seems like that would be pretty close to what came factory stock on my MS361...

I am looking to replace the silk type filter on my pioneers. Farmsaw and p41. I used a precut maxflo on my p40 and its great but I cant find them anymore. Im not sure the foam type will get it done. I love all the different ideas though and may use them on other saws.

What you really want is the flat sheet polyester material that is used on Stihl MS170/180 filters. Cut to size and throw in the laundry to clean!

That lets a ton of fines through? I'd use an oiled foam filter in a 170 considering how caked full of dust the intake tube gets before the carb.

I haven't seen that but if the filter doesn't fit tight around the edges or the top cover is loose it could let stuff through there.

I appears that the OEM air filter for my car also uses the same polyester material It is large enough to seal well around the edges and I haven't seen any fines getting through... and I check when changing the filter.

This polyester is also a DEPTH type of filter and will trap debris through the depth of the material and not just on the surface like a thin paper or flocked filter. This gives it much longer life but makes cleaning more challenging.

The oiled foam filter is also a depth type but it has its own maintenance and cleaning issues. I think that the OP would be best if he could find some flat polyester filter material and cut to fit tightly.

Twinair sells, or used to, sell their dual density layer foam in sheets about 12“ x 16“. I think it’s about a half inch thick. I think I could get four or five motorcycle flat filters out of a $20 sheet of foam, one of the OEM filters were $25 a piece for that little flat piece of form
