So, it sounds like the original poster's problem was the dealer getting him the outer dawg for an 046, and coupling it with the large inner dawg for an 044. I wish ELLC would come back to this thread and comment on what it took to get his spikes to line up perfectly.
What's even more confusing, is that Stihl offers a complete kit, p/n 122 007 1019, that includes the big cover, the large black rubber chip guard, the white plastic chain bumper on inside of cover, both the larger inner & outer dawgs, the roller chain guard, and the outer dawg bolts & locknuts. Why does the complete kit come with the outer cover?
For those with Stihl's parts, p/n's 1122 664 0506 and 1122 664 0501, and are running the stock cover, do the dawgs line up perfectly?
ETA: This will be for my 044, year 1998.
ETA 2: OK, OK, I think I now understand the purpose behind the taller cover. The larger dogs hold the bottom of the saw off the ground, and the taller cover hangs a bit lower so that it fits flush with the ground. Wait, that can't be right. If that were the case, then the bottom of the saw would be uneven, and would more than likely rock back and forth when starting, or sitting pretty on the bench.
