You didn't get ripped but you did pay full list price for the saws. He tossed in a chain and the cases are running 43.00 now so you save a few bucks there. He can't cut anything on the MS170, just no wiggle room in that saw. He couldn't knock off much on the 270 but could have drop 20.00 to keep ya smiling, I would have. He didn't rip you off though..

Re:

Thanks for the info. I didn't pick them up yet so maybe I can get a better deal out of him. As for the condition of the saws They are new. Or should I be skeptical of that as well? Should I request the box? Or just accept the saws he has off the shelf. Also Should I ask to run them at the dealer to make sure they start? Sorry for the newbie questions.

Very hard to buy a Stihl in the box, againist policy. Each product is supposed to be assembled, fueled up , run, rpms checked and your suppose to get all the info you need about those saws. Getting the box with the saw is just something you will toss later, let the dealer pitch it for you.

He's not gonna cut a penny off that small saw, just no money in it to cut. You should skip the 170 altogether and go with the 180. The 170 is weak, the 180 is about the same saw but puts out more power. The specs on those saws are close but in the cut the 180 puts that 170 in the dust. Where I work we quit selling the 170 because the 180 out sold it 20-1. List on the 180 is 219.95 and he may knock a few bucks off that one since your buying 2 saws at the sametime.

No mention of the 361 yet?! Heck, if he hasn't actually picked them up yet, why not just buy one saw that will do ALL his work? And, if the need for a smaller saw presents itself, why not opt for the MS200 rear handle?

I won't bite, would be clearly off topic..........:greenchainsaw:

...but the 270 weights pretty close to the 361, with a lot less power.......:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I consider the 270 a pretty good saw, anyway.

Re:

Welll once again the board has spoken and as usual I remain undecided.
This is killing me and causing alot of fights with the girlfriend. She says I spend too much time looking at saw catalogs. Thanks for the help guys I will look at the MS180 and 361 tomorrow

Dang! I thought we were about to get one more new member in the 270 club. There's not a lot of us. :)

Glad to hear you are taking the advice on upgrading the 170 to the 180. You won't hear anybody that owns a 180 say anything bad about the way it cuts. I use mine a lot, it's light and has plenty of guts to handle anything it was designed for.

As for the 270, I really like mine as well, but I've found it to be a bit lacking in power when the 18" bar is buried in hardwood. So I'm looking to upgrade, not sure right now if that will be a 361 or a 440. (See what a slippery slope this site is? :) )

BTW, I paid about $380 for the 270 with the 18" bar and an extra loop of RS chain. And a nice Stihl cap. :)

I think that was a fair deal on the MS270. The one I bought (slightly used but I was running it and doing the maintenance on it so knew what it had been through) just breaking in, cost me 300.cdn with a couple of extras (chaps, gas can, etc), I haven't cut a lot with it yet but so far have been very pleased with it.
18" bar, rs .325 btw. Found a new case for it sitting on a garbage heap, unused, free, yay! The new price up here July '06, was a hair over 500$
It seems to be well built, runs very well (the decomp was a good thing for Sthil to add imo) and is quick and nimble. I have found the balance excellent and I am not a small person, and the power seems to be there though I have yet to bury it in anything other than large pine (pitch city, yuck). So call me a happy camper, as I use it more this spring (clearing some forest for a friend down the road, firs and arbutus (madrone to the folks south of here), I'll be sure to post a report in the appropriate thread on its performance etc..
As for your next choice, hm, go for what you are comfortable with but do your research 1st then shop around, best be informed ahead of time and this is a great place to start (there are many worse things to be addicted to other than saws).
My 0.02$ worthless for the afternoon.

You don't need a 361 if your getting a 270. The 270 is a good saw. I only brought up the 180 over the 170 based one what I've seen with my own eyes. I've used both and for the slight more money the 180 is well worth it over the 170. The 170 is and always has been a price break saw. Its main purpose is to get customers in the door thinking hey I can get a Stihl for 179.95. You can but its the weakest Stihl of the lot. The 180 for a few bucks more is by far a better buy. The 270 verses the 361, hmm. Unless your doing alot of sawing and need a pro saw the 270 fits the bill just fine.

Thanks Tom, well said.
If I were to upgrade it would not be to a 361 as the jump (I think) would be not worth it, next step would be 440 or bigger (and I will be cursing the guys here all the way to the gas-station), run the saw for a bit and tell us your thoughts.

Re:

I hear ya on the MS361. But I need a saw to run a 16" bar. Wouldn't the 361 be overkill? I already have the infamous "boat anchor" 029super.

Um, didn't you say you just got a MS@&)?? Mine has 18" from the face, works great! I think it would handle a 20" for a bit without much stress as long as a person wasn't pressuring it much (and that isn't good on most small saws AFAICc). I am tempted to throw my 24" Oregon rollomatic on just for fun but its 3/8ths, the sproket is I'm sure different, and my hands are slapped (not sapped) sore. :( No playing with wrenches today........um......wenches yes, others no.

:yoyo: MS@&) :yoyo: a secret I am sure :yoyo:
