My splitter calls for dexron III or hydraulic fluid. Any advantages or disadvantages to either? The system holds around 25 qts. 16 Gpm Haldex pump with cartridge screw on filter. Thanks

Well it does fall back to what the mfg suggests to a point. Dextron
has great cold weather features, a nice light viscosity, 5wt if I recall
and is generally a readily available hydraulic oil. Regular hydraulic oil
seems to be about 10wt, and if your splitter is designed to run with
ATF and you put in regular hydraulic oil, I'd imagine that you'd see a
big slide in performance, the pump will work harder until everything is
warmed up. 6 gallons will be a fun oil change when the time comes.

Is this a smaller splitter? if so they are likely counting on the cold
performance improvement when using the lighter oils.

What fast said is on target. Although either will work don't mix them. Use what is in it now unless you intend to completely rid the sytem of prior fluid.
