I'm trying to replace a diahatsu 3cyl., liquid cooled, 34 hp, diesel engine in a vermeer 352 stump grinder. I know it's not a very good engine, but it would be the easiest solution for me with the least, actually none, amount of retrofitting. The problem is that they discontinued this engine because of all the problems. Last year, I was given the phone number of the diahatsu rep that handled all the complaints and issues for this particular engine. But I lost it and have no idea where or who gave it to me. Anyway, I'm trying to get hold of this guy and see if by some miracle he has or knows where I can get my hands on a left over that may be laying around. Anyone got any ideas or heard of such a thing or such a person. I think I remember that he lived on the west coast.?

Thank you 352 stumper. I think it might work, but I'm way out of my element so I'll have to see what the differences are. The original motor I was looking for is the same model (58A477) but a different type, (0234-E2) compared to the ebay model (58A477 0205 E2) I'm not sure how that all works. You know anything about that stuff. It probably is very similar and may need to move a few components around, which would be fine, but I'm not sure. Whats your thoughts. Any diesel mechanics out there that might have a clue. I'd be very excited if the type was just minor stuff I could figure out. I realoy appreciate it stumper. Hope the 372 works out, that was also a thought I had.

So I checked the numbers codes for the two engines. The type refers to the the crank shaft and governor spring. I looked up the parts for both engines and found the crank shafts were the same part number. I couldn't find the governor spring listed so I assume they are the difference in the engines to suit the applications they were made for. Seems like a minor thing unless they are referring to an internal spring that might be beyond my abilities to fix but could be taken care of by a mechanic. Am I in the ball park?

I thought they were pretty interchangeable. But like a said this is a 31 hp not the original 34. Did you have any other luck finding a rep?

Good morning stumper, They are indeed interchangeable. Only a few minor adjustments. I'll be talking to the seller today and see if we can work something out, thank you much. And yes I did get the name and number of the rep. for Diahatsu. I'll be calling him before I commit to anything else. I have another 352 that is running very well so I'm blessed and can take my time making the right decision. when all is said and done, I was hoping to have 2 machines, using the same parts and being equal in cutting. I hate pursuing and engine I have no faith in, but it suits my purposes. Maybe I can baby it and get what I need from it for a reasonable time.

Well I found another 31 hp replacement engine and got it shipped over (took 7 months of looking) Time to install, did you need to do any modifications from the 34hp to the 31? Also was there any difference in performance? (I am guessing it is hard to tell) finally what did you use to lift the engines on and off the grinder? Thanks for your help

Good morning stumper. The 31 hp engine I installed was the exact same engine. The engine mounts were different from whatever application it came from, but the mounts on the old engine bolted right on. It installed very easy and worked great after. I used a come along hooked over the eaves of my garage to lift the old one out and the new in place. Probably should have rented an engine hoist or something, less awkward. There is a place to mount engine plates to hook up to. I have a couple of them sitting in my shed if need them, but they are just a plates with a hole in the top to hook onto to. Not but difference in the performance from the 34 hp. I'm just a hacker, but if I can help, just yell.
