I bought a what was representred as a 064 a few days ago. The top plate was missing but the magnum was still visible. Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the 64 and 66 ? What are the mechanical differences ? It seems like the 64 was made for a short time. Was there a problem with them I should be aware of. I have had saws on both sides (044 and 084) but I have no experience with the 90cc models. I also bought a Husky 2100Xp so I could compare the two.

Thanks,
Bill

I can't help you much. I own a 066 and my neighbor has a 064. the 064 is in the 84cc range I believe. Duscontinued about 20 years ago. The air filter on his 064 is square and realtively flat, with a second filter on top of it for the rough dust. The 066 has an "advanced filtration system" of coarse. A round filter about 3.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick, hollow in the middle.

If you got a 066 by accident, that's good nes though, right?

I there an easy way to tell the difference between an 070 and an 090 (besides measuring the bore)?

Robert, the 070 clutch has 3 shoes, the 090 has 6 and is 18mm larger in diameter

070/090

Robert,
Steve here... The 090 has a larger diameter 6 piece clutch and the starter housing is larger where the pulley sets, to accomidate the larger starter pulley. The pic shows a 070 clutch on the left and the 090 clutch on the right.

Thanks, now that you've mentioned it I remember seeing that the clutches were different. Didn't know that about the starter housing though. Just making sure I got what I paid for.:)

Steve, did you get my reply about the top cover? BTW, I really wanted that starter cover on Ebay until you ran the price up!:D

Robert

Wow, I finally beat someone to the punch on a reply:p
Just found out yesterday those 6 clutch shoes cost $33 apeice:eek:
Mine still have some life in them, but not a lot.
Finally got to try it out in the mill, and one of those springs stretched right out. The chain stopped as soon as it touched the log:angry:

070/090 starter cover

Robert,
ME... I just set my bid high I did'nt expect anyone to run the price up like that. I got up at midnight and saw it $90 and almost freeked out!!. Anyway here are two pics of an 070cover and an 090cover.

Robert do you have an 090 or 070
Steve

cover

Robert,
I sent the cover back, it was for an 070. If you look at the two pics look at the edge of the STIHL logo in relationship to the starter rope hole, on the two covers
ANy way if you need an 090 cover I'll sell you my old one. I'll even pic up the shipping.

shoes cost $33 apeice

Each shoe is $33.00?:dizzy: I have 5 with good linings and one with the lining missing completely. I think I'll use it as is as long as I can, seems to work fine. I've been thinking of buying another 090 just to have a parts saw. With the price/availability of parts it's probably worth it. I tried to get an exhaust gasket from my dealer and they said it was only available for export to Brazil!

I don't know the mechanical differences between the 064 and 066, but don't the 064/084 have less rpm and more torque than their 066/088 counterparts?

090 exhaust gasket

Robert,
I just bought an exhaust gasket for my 090 at the dealer.
Here is a pic of my shroud, with the notch outa the back.

Looking at the old rpm sheet I have, the 084 tachs out at 12,500 and the 088 is at 12,000 ., Hmmm

Ok I am really puzzled. Maniac says the 064 was discoutined in the early 80's. I was under the assumption that the 064 replaced the 056 and I though the 56 were built all through the mid 80's.
I guess I will check Mike's site to see what I can find out there

Howdy Bill G.

The 064 did indeed replace the 056, the latest incarnation of which, the 056 AV Magnum 2, was marketed here in the states through April of 1985. It is still marketed in other countries however. The 064 was of the same modular design as the 044 and 084. The first in that series was the 024, introduced in May of 1982. The 064 has the same stroke as an 066, but only has a 52mm bore making 84cc. The 064 and 066 cranks are not interchangeable, as the timing is different. Obvious differences externally would be: non-clear fuel tank, narrower chain brake handle ( by 19mm ), the recoil starter housing is narrower than an 066 housing ( also by 19mm ), the muffler is boxier and has an external heat shield similar to that on an 028 on older 064s, the sprocket cover is similar to one on an 038, and looking down on the top cover you'll see that the profile of it is narrower than that of an 066. The design of the 064 was to make a saw with similar output to an 056 but 30% lighter weight.

1993 sounds much more in line my what I remeber. I was sure it was not discountined 20 yeras ago like posted earlier. as for the clear tank there are 66's that did not have the clear tanks. Was the 64 marketed as a "Magnum" ? Why was it killed so quickly ?
