can anyone tell me the difference between the Stihl 050 and a 051?

I have a Mac 120, Echo 4400, Husky 50, Husky 61 and Stihl 041. Occassionally I need to cut a tree that is larger in diameter than my 041's 20" bar or my 61's 20" bar (i.e., tree greater than 40" diameter).

I was thinking of getting a 050 or 051 with a 36" bar. This is something I might use on 5-10 trees per year, and several times in the trunk until I could switch over to my 041. I was thinking about the 050 or 051 because I have had a number of Stihls and like their durability, and because they will take a 36" bar. And being older, they are cheap. I'm not going to use this saw a lot, so I don't want to spend a lot

But I'm open to other suggestions about a cheap, dependable saw for occassional use that would run 36" chain. Since I'm not going to be using it very often I'm not real concerned if it is heavy, has a lot of vibration or is slow. I just want it to start 5-10 times per year, and not need constant repair. Any thoughts?

The differences are mainy cosmetic. The 051AV is a pretty nice saw. I'd stay away from the 050 - just too old. Try to get an 051AV electronic ignition version (just so that it's later saw). Make sure the oil pump works. I've seen many that are worn out in the center of the gear. Parts aren't hard to get as the 051 was made until last years as the TS510, and is still made for South America. The 056mag is a better saw, but it hasn't been made for nearly 20 years and parts are definitely harder to get than for the 051av.

I have a 051AV Electronic that I went though, and is in real nice shape. It's now gathering dust on my bench so I might be persuaded to part with it. I'm not short of big saws or long bars!

Can't speak to the 050/51 bit. The 041 will easily handle a 24" bar and would probably do o.k. with a longer one and skip-tooth chain.

041 = 61cc (not a whole lot of saw for pulling a 36")
051 = 89cc (getting there, but still small for pulling a 36")

If you want something cheap, buy a big old non-Stihl, non-Husky saw like an Echo 1001VL or similar. If you want to be really cheap, wait 'till you see one wearing a long bar, because a new bar might cost more than an old saw!

The older generation saws like the 051 pulled a 36 inch bar (with fiull comp) pretty well.. They have a lot more torque than the newer saws, but max out at 10,000rpm. They were often fitted with 404 chain.

I'd take Lake's opinion every time over mine. :)
