It seems like there are a few books that always get recommended to newbies on this site. Anyone know of any good tree related books that are not manuals?

A few of my favs: 'Fire' by Sebastian Younger, the intro is about his fledgling treeclimbing career. Hit me close to home as it took place close to where I live and was going through a similar time when I first read it. Almost forgot, most of the rest of the book is about smokejumpers.

'The Wild Trees' by Richard Preston. I still haven't finished it yet but it is an awesome book about redwood researchers and climbers.

Anyone else???

Are you saying you wrote this book? No offense but i'd be a little more impressed if someone other than the author recommended this book. Has anyone on this site read it? Does have a catchy title since that is what i do all day.

Oh, so now it's not a book but a work in progress?

Didn't you mean to say "you may cut down saplings in semi-urban places but, AJ KNOWS cutting HUGE trees in URBAN places"?

That s funny! Good novel...."Sometimes a Sweet Notion" by Ken Keasey (sp?) made into a movie called "Never Give An Inch", w Paul Neuman. Big wood logging. You ll never put it down once you start it. By the way, Is your name (beowulf) based on novel by existentialist writer Herman Hesse?

Never heard of Herman Hesse. Name is from the old english heroic poem. Read a translation as a kid in school and have always found the story interesting. I'll have to give Sometimes a Sweet Notion a try. Grew up in a logging family and enjoy stories about it. Thanks for the tip.

Movie s real good but if you see it lst you ruin the book. Always seems that way IMO. You d never guess Keasey was the LSD guru from the 60 s from reading this book.

You're telling me-have seen way too many good books ruined by the movies. And the sad thing is, the only way alot of people know about the book is because of the movie. And if the movie sucked, they figure the book must suck too.

I recommend "The Education of Little Tree" by Forrest Carter, easy to read, hard to forget. "Adirondack French Louie" by Harvey L. Dunham is a good read also.

I recognized his name from a book I read about the Hells Angels written by Hunter Thompson in the 1960's (Thompson is the dude who wrote leaving Las Vegas)

Ok, here's my favorite tree related novel:
Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino.

The story of a boy who climbs into some trees in the woods after his sister cooks his snail collection (takes place in Italy) and spends the rest of his life in trees, never stepping on the ground again. Hangs out with bandits, puts a mattress in a tree for some good fun, meets Napoleon, wages war, becomes a great philosopher etc. Good read.

I'm waiting for the Alpine Jesus web site! I've given up on a live appearance, one heck of a busy holy man. So many questions, can He turn sawdust into a ham and cheese sandwich? Or bring eastern hemlock back from the dead? Or walk on poison ivy? Maybe all this will come out in the book, I'm desperately in need of a surly epiphany!
