Still been hanging out waiting on digital cameras of quality to come down to $200/3+MP/3+Optical,
Che's lens auto lens cover idea made sense too.

Am looking at HP720/$200 after rebates (staples)/3.3MP/3xOptical Auto lens cover.
i think HP is supposed to be quality in about everything, including cameras.

Any experiences, ideas? Lemon?

The lens doesn't take attatchments so no RBTree etc. shots.

Thanx,

My first digital camera is a cheap off-brand name that just was amazing for what it provided. It gets thown around everywhere and still keeps tickin. It uses SmartMedia sticks, but there is a built-in limitation for the size it will take. The picture quality is acceptable and I only mutter about battery time as an inonvenience.

I now also have a HP 318 2.0M that uses CompactFlash sticks whose size is only limited apparently by what I can afford. With a 128M card, I can shoot 717 pictures, and about 130 of the best quality.

I also buy the multi-format readers so I can interchange formats easily.

For a guy waddling around with a 35mm for years, this is a whole new world.

My comments include getting a camera with a built-in lens cover; a 3M machine out to be awesome; and also a caution that the lack of mass and bulk allow the cameras and the memory cards to scurry off and hide themselves quite quickly.

I got one of those $20 aluminum tool boxes with the qubed foam innards. Pull just enough foam out to jam the camera, cables, batery charger, stick reader, spare sticks, 2 walkie-talkies. Got a little more room if I get a few more things like a spare batery.

There are two ideas for digital cameras that I saw in a photo rag, which i thought were good ones. First, was a digital camera that was the same size as a roll of film and fit into your existing 35mm camera, essentially turning it into a digital. That way you get the great optics of a 35mm and the convenience of a digital.
The other idea I liked was a digital camera that accepted normal 35mm lenses.
I'm sure there are a lot more improvments coming, so spyder, just dive in and accept that your new camera will be obsolete before your check clears. I can't comment on the hp720, but in general you pay for the optics(lense) and the megapixal count. Most digital cameras are lacking in the lense department.
If you are any good at eBay, you can get cameras for about half retail. If you're not a seasoned eBayer, you might get taken though.
