Do I love firewood?

No kidding, me too. My dad keeps telling me the money is not justifiable, but I keep telling him I do because I love it. I would rather make $10,000 a year cutting wood then $100,000 sitting in a office any day

Here is a story that only you guys will understand:
I cut half my wood on my brother’s land, last spring 2 big maples came down and I intended to whack them up this weekend and the next. For the past 2 weeks I have not been able to connect with him to confirm this. I started to get all panicked and concerned that I was going to miss out cutting up that maple. He finally called me back tonight (now I can sleep) LOL, am I sick or what? If I did not get that wood I still would have had plenty to get me through the winter.

Just yesterday, not even a quarter mile from my house two dozers cleared off around ten acers of oak. Of course I stopped to ask if I could cut it up. He replied you need to ask the property owner. Well today on the way home I asked him when the chipper is coming in. Tomarrow he said. I will be there first thing in the morning with my 96psd F350 and trailer, along with my 660 and ms360. Talking about heart pounding. I think I might be able to get the claw operator to load my trailer with logs. The down turn is that these logs are coated in dirt. I got plenty of chains.

Understood. :)

I had heard about 3 or 4 standing oak trees that were to be removed in a nearby town to make way for the new county jail. So I started making phone calls to see if I could have them after they were cut down. I was pretty excited...close to the house (9 miles away)...easily manageable trees without the need of equipment to load. But the contractor told me the trees were to be taken to their company yard and that for insurance reasons I could not get on the property to cut on them...I figure they'd be worried that I would sue them if I got hurt on their property. But I'm not that type of guy...I can (and do) take responsibility for my actions. But they don't know me and are protecting their butts...

Now I'm watching a nearby logging operation involving oaks. After a few drive-bys, it looks promising for oak tops.

Nice find...except for the dirt...but I'd still be there. A wire brush to clear the dirt for each cut might help. Sounds like you got yourself a great wood hauling truck and a great firewood saw combo.

+1

I know how your feeling. I have 4 cut cord and 8 large felled pines to limb and cut into rings ... but not on my property and it worries me the guy might sell the property (he's a lifestyler not a farmer) and the wood we have cut and are about to cut will go with the sale

Thankfully I secured a bucket load of wood on a farmers property today ... and wont be selling in a hurry

THIS IS GREAT!!!!! THE FIRST TIME MY OLDEST SON HELPED ME SPLIT WOOD IT WAS SOME LIVE OAK. BEING A BBQ LOVER HE SAID "MMMMMM" I SMELL BBQ, I SAID "SMELL THIS!" HOLDING THE WOOD UP TO OUR NOSES HE SAID "IS THAT WHAT BBQ COMES FROM?"
THIS THREAD GIVES ME HOPE THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME.

Nothing wrong with you mate ... but that post in upper case (caps lock) is hard to read :dizzy:

Boy do I love you firewood nuts! Most of my career I have only been concerned with putting the trees on the ground and getting them hauled off. I have always given my firewood away to anyone who wanted to come haul it off. I just recently started stacking it in our yard so I can give my guys something to do when it gets slow. I will be selling it this year but the profits will mostly go to my guys.

I ran into that insurance problem with a farmer. Signed a "hold harmless agreement" and problem solved. Probably won't work with a company though, worth making the offer.

Sounds like something I should look into. Could you give me more details on a "hold harmless agreement"?

In my case, it was just a scribbled out paragraph stating that I would not hold him or his insurance company responsible for any injuries I sustained while working in that grove (I had offered to pay a lawyer to draw one up). A lawyer would probably fancy it up with a batch of 'whereas'es, parties of this and that, etc. There may even be a boilerplate available on the 'net.

Thank ya! I'll have to draft something up along those lines.
