Do they make stones for dressing bars or just files?

Do you think a stone would grind better and last longer? Did this with a big file but seemed to wear it out fast. New to dressing bars. I’ve put a log of hours on this bar and never touched it IMG_4631.jpegIMG_4632.jpegIMG_4627.jpeg

You have a controller inline on your power cord? What kind of sanding disk do you put on it?

I use a cheap disc sander. I think it was about 40 Euros brand new, but it has an adjustable table. It's important to dress the bar square.

i used to use a grinder and keep it square then got a dedicated bar file gauge, it came with 4 files and does a good job. just wear gloves or sooner rather than later youll be looking for bandaids

I use the 12" flat plate shop grinder with a suitable PSA disc on it to dress my bars and afterwards a flat b astard cut file to remove any burrs left behind. The shop grinder is primarily used for deburring and chamfering jobs but I own the shop so I can use it for whatever. It also makes a nice twist drill sharpener.

Are you sure? As far as I know, the Pferd tool uses a special file, not a stone. I don't think there is a tool out there that uses a stone.

Used a chunk of aluminum I had laying around and took it to my friends shop and came up with this myself, having a hard time finding a stone that’s corse grit, it has a 3/8 slot in it so I can use a 3/8 stone or 1/4 and shim it, pferd wants 20$ for 1 of these files like I have in the jig , I went to Lowe’s and bought a 10$ file and cut 2 of these files out of it IMG_4691.jpegIMG_4688.jpegIMG_4689.jpegIMG_4682.jpegIMG_4686.jpeg

I use the Oregon one (STIHL and Vallorbe are identical, but different colors).

Refused to pay $30 for it. Tried it. Then bought a second one for field use.

So convenient; can use without a vise, so I am more likely to touch up a bar with a small burr, when doing daily cleaning and maintenance, then waiting for it to become a bigger job.

Did not like the files on the cheaper eBay / Amazon clones.

Did not like the Pferd tool as well.

Posted a thread a while back. Will add a link if I find it.

If you were asking me, I used different pulleys to slow it down. Small pulley on the motor and large on the arbor. The sanding disc is a steel plate made for it with a self-adhesive disc stuck to it.
