I love working off an overhead TIP with the steel-core lanyard around the spar or whatever I happen to be working on, but I have been known to work off the steel-core only. Sometimes, especially on quick removals, I will use the climbing line anchored up in the canopy, but once the tree is topped out and there is only the spar left, depending on the height I will either descend on the climbing line or just hook it down to the terra firma.
I try to be extremely conscious in the tree while airborne, and use an overhead TIP 95% of the time, but there are definately situations where the climbing line plays second fiddle to the lanyard.
Don't tell the tree police.
