Been offered one for 200 (Canadian) with a 3' bar and new .404 skip tooth full chisel chain. seems fairly light for the size of the saw (compared to older stihls anyway). I trust the seller when he tells me it runs well.

Comments on the saw?

How old?

Parts availabe?

I can tell you its a BIG saw, you should probably go for it. parts may not be extra easy to get, but its worth the money, if nothing else, you can probably build a race saw from it.

The only comment would be about HP rating. We went through this topic a while ago and concluded that they were far over stated,on the Sachs -Dolmar.Most likely when every thing was over stated as a selling gimic. The saw,in itself,is most likely ok.I,for one, have never seen one.

I think most guys that collect those kind of saws would like to have a 153, I think the race saw is the 166 not the 153, they are a very big saw in size and weight but not real common like the 166

Thanks, couldn't get into the acres site when I tried. Didn't think the saw was quite that heavy! THe only reasons I'm hesitating are
1) no chain brake ( I know, don't need it on a big saw like that), and
2)no dealers nearby.

Maybe this thing isn't a 153, the acres pic shows a brake. wrong cover on an older saw? I think I need to take another look at the saw!

pwb, if you cant tell the model look at the serial on the right c case the first 3 digits will be the model

I had a 153 in the shop a while back. The bar mount is an odd one and hard to find bars for. It can be converted by grinding flats on the bar studs. Parts can be hard to come by. I cut with it a little, but really didn't run it enough to get an impression. I don't think I'd want to use for very long though!

Thanks guys, all good info., especially about the case numbers. I may bring it home to play with. Sometimes a guy just needs bigger toys! Still got my eye on a box full of 084 parts, sounds like the owner won't go looking for the rest of the parts until lawnmower season is over!

bought the saw, 33" Cannon hardnose bar, been drilled for a mill of some sort? Chain is Stihl chisel, skip tooth. Seems to run prtty good, maybe a little rich, but it's waaaay too hot to play with it. muffler has a little split in the centre, one pipe on the right side for exhaust, something I've not seen before. Going looking for the serial number when I have time next week. I think it may be a keeper! Anyone know if there's a brake sitting around to fit it? Prtty much full wrap handlebar, seller called it a "west coast faller's special", said they sold a lot of them in his area.(Eastern BC).

100cc, 5.2 kW (10 HP SAE)
22 lbs. with 17 in bar & chain
at 10hp.. thats one hell of a cuttin monster!
grab it while you can!
Note that the statement refers to "hp SAE".
5.2 kw equals about 7.1 hp/7.0 bhp as I recall.........

Thanks, that explains a little. Tried it out against an almost new 066 in a big piece of ash. 066 outran it, but had an 8 tooth with 3/8 chain, and the Dolmar has a hardnose bar, .404 skip tooth. still worked pretty good though, torquey saw.

saws

I never saw a 153 before, ihave about 3dolmar saws one of them is a 152 dolmar, i think the saw u have is a 152. 166dolmarnp.

The 152, and 153 are fairly similar, just some internal differences, and the model numbers.

Finally had a chance to do a little serious work with this saw. By brother had a locust come down in the wind, tree had three stems, one previously removed, 2nd one fell beside his deck and hung up about 20 feet off the gound in another locust. Convinced him (after cleaning up stem#2) that the third stem was an accident waiting to happen (it was split at a crotch about 20 feet up) so we took the whole thing down. Total stump was about 3' by 4'. Last cut with the Dolmar, the saw just chewed it's way through. I think the last bar on the saw had to be smaller, turned he oiler up a fair bit. Don't know if my 064 would have been happy making that cut. I know it would have done it, but I think this low rev Dolmar was a better saw for the job. Only problem I encountered (other than the oiler) it seemed to want to get chips under the chain and get bound up when running sideways until I got the oiler turned up.

Good saw!
