Have been thinking about dolmar 7900 for awhile. Friend of a friend owns local rental business that has had dolmars for 10 years and have been happy with them. Called to see if he can get me a unit and what cost would be. Also says they still have some of the saws that are 10 years old. Rental cost is $12.50/hour, so thinking about a test run before buying a new one or used one.

Question is, how old of saws should i stay away from if he presents a good deal on a used unit i.e. model improvements/enhancements? Any input would be appreciated. I really don't know much about them other than browsing here.

Thanks,

Patrick :chainsaw:

Patrick,

Looking for a 7900 Dolmar, are you? It is on my list of saws to buy, but am having a hard time justifying it with all the saws I have in the garage now. Going price around here is $610 OTD powerhead only. If you want a deal on a used saw, you can go the Makita 6401 route from Home Depot and perform the 7900 conversion for about $225.

Looks like you have a few good saws already - that 920 J-red and 038 Stihl in your signature.

Around my way ,a 7900 is going for around 600-almost 700,Depending on which shop you go to.A 6401 from HD and doing the conversion could be a great deal depending on initial cost of the unit. If you are looking at the used saw route, there are a bunch of the things to look for.Check for compression by the drop check of the pull rope.If it drops right down, chances are it needs a ring of worse. If you can tug off the muffler, check for scuff on the cylinder walls.I like to look at the bottom of the saw,to look for repairs to the tank,or signs of it being dropped.Im sure there are others factors Ive overlooked, and Im sure others will chime in with mo:biggrinbounce2: re.
