I've always ran STIHL but saw the Dolmar 7300? I think it is. Weighs the same as a MS 440 but more power.

So anyone have one? What do you think of them?

*** Please if you think ECHO is a top of the line saw please DO NOT respond. ***

Thanx

...

It actually weights a bit more than the 440, but not much - the 7900 is the same saw with a 79cc engine, and even more power....

No, I don't have one, but the 5100S sure is a cool saw to use - the only thing I don't like is the "plastic" clutch cover.....

When did the 440 start weighing less then factory list? 440 shows 13.9lbs flush wrap power head only. My Dolmar/Makita 7900 weighs 13.5lbs with some bar oil and mix fluid residue still in tanks. factory list on 6400,7300,7900 are around 13.6lbs. With 7900 filled up bar oil and gas tanks it weighs in at 18.5LBS with 16" b+c. Only 1LB more then a 17.5LBS 361 and 357 filled up ready to use, Yes i own all 3 to know. Stihl 440 specs listed in link below.

I would buy a 7900 before a stock 440 or 460 also and for the same weight of the 7300, why not get the most powerful saw in the class 7900, 79cc and under.

Skip the 7300

and go for the 7900, Claims the 7900 will use less fuel.
The 7900 is a whole lot of fun to run.Put some LGX chain on it and let er eat the wood.
There is no replacement for displacement.

You will not be able to get a 440 after too long, they are being discontinued. The 441 seems to fill the gap very well. I can't vouch for the dolmar but I love my 440 and would not trade it for nothing:) If you have a good dealer get a 440/441 and you will be very happy:jester: The factory dual port muffler makes a nice difference too!!!

DLG/KWF (independant German test sites) weighted the 440 at 6.2 kg, and the 6400/7300/7900, and the 372xp (with low air filter cover) at 6.4kg - admittedly not much difference, but it is there. The specs of the 441 say 6.6kg, no test report yet.
The MS460 test report says 6.5kg......

Why get the MS 441's when you can get a MS 460?? STIHL didn't make any sense to me discontinuing the MS 440.

OK so the Dolmar is a decent saw. What are some of the things you do & don't like about it?

Oh let me list all the cons

first off and foremost.. It did not cost near as much as a stihl 460.
2 smoother in the cut than a 460. wait.. You asked what I did not like about it.. I can honestly say there is nothing I dislike about my 7900

The Dolmars sound like great saws. I've used a 7300 and it cut about on par with a 440. It just didn't feel right to me. Couldn't put my finger on it. Stihl's just feel right in my hands.

The 7900 sounds like a great saw. The 5100 is well liked too, but why do they take so long to return to idle?:bang:

I have several modded 7900's, but ran the one stock before having it modded!!!

I also had a pair of makita 7301's.............same as a Dolmar 7300 but wearing blue & silver!!!

For the money and power take a pass on the 7300 and go straight to the 7900.............IMO you won't regret it!!!

For the money the 7900 is the best bet!!!

That would be a hat trick... meet the EPA reg's with a non-stratocharged (or whatever) saw...

They might just glue a honking cat muffer to the front... and peal back the plastic 3 inches to stop it melting.:dizzy:

Maybe if the 7900 will be strato'd.............I doubt it but...........maybe!!!

Yah the EPA is b!tching about EVERYTHING now. The new diesel engines for trucks are like $5K more then the older ones (>2007)

Lordy, don't get me started. Saying chainsaws have any appreciable atmospheric effect is like expecting that pissing off a pier will raise the ocean level. I'm not saying they're not stinky, smog emmitting devices, there's just not enough of em' to make a difference. As long as there are Lincoln Navigators and Hummers on the road the whole thing is a farce.

If you add that to the fact that more of the leaned-out saws are turning to smoking rubble faster and ending up in landfills only to be replaced by more saws (and think about the crud that went up into the air from making them) I honestly think they're screwing up the industry for very little benefit.

I've been regulated by the Feds for years and have come to the conclusion that they are just as concerned with covering their butts and their own job security as anything else. I apologize to anyone on here working for the feds.. I would NEVER say that they don't employ some terrific people, it just doesn't translate to collective wisdom. BTW, all this is coming from an envirnmentalist. This kind of misguided action ticks people off and gives environemntalists a bad name.

Off topic, sorry peeps. Carry on!!
