I would like some confirmation that dormant season pruning of birch is now acceptable. I had always been told that this was bad due to the bleeding come sap flow, but seem to remember someone saying that it is now considered to be OK to do. Is this true?

Thanks

Alan

It has always been OK the bleeding is only aesthetic. Some clients donot like the look. "my tree is bleeding to death!"

On hard maples I like to take the sapcyclles and suck on them while I prune.

BIRCH

We prune birch here in the middle of winter, this one being mild the sap is flowing. As for maple sap, if you can gather a cup or so in the spring, boil it up and add a tea bag-delicious!
