New at making eye splices?
Thinking of ordering the splice training kit?
Don`t.
Get the Brion Toss video on splicing, a good length of double braid rope, Toss splice wand, a heavy needle and a good heavy pair of scissors.
Samson eye splicing instructions are very confusing.

Excellent advice from Kevin. If you buy the Samson kit and then the splicewand, you'll realize you wasted the money on the kit. The video is excellent, it's going to the dentist with me so I can brush up (no pun intended, but there it is :D ) while I'm in the chair.

I just about went crazier trying to follow those instructions that come with the splicing kit.

make a mark call it one,
make a mark call it two,
make a mark call it three,
make a mark call it R,
make a mark call it T,
make a mark call it Z,
run all those inside each other, take two out and pass it through R but not past T and only as far as Z where it meets three,
one should now meet three and these should be pulled together to meet two.

Now hang your life on it!

After making a few splices the Samson way, I had great respect for splicers and how their heads must swim with all those marks and letters. What do they do when the tape comes off the fid and the core, start over like I have to? Then here comes Brion and his wand and he teaches you the splice in such a way that the steps actually make sense and you don't have to wonder why you are going to make your next move a certain way. 16 strand is supposed to be harder than double braid but I find it easier and faster, I attribute this to the fact that I learned the splice from the video and not a black and white drawing on a small piece of paper.

I would consider a double braid harder than a 16-strand splice, but it's not that difficult once you've got the hang of it. Three-strand on the other hand...I need to learn that! It's the splice of the ages, and nobody does it anymore.
