So I want a portable drill press type rig to mount to a tree trunk. It would be able to be mounted to the tree, non invasively, then leveled or set at a specific angle.

Making drilling the holes for cabling and bracing much easier.

Does something like this exist? Or do I need to invent it?

I've googled a couple things and come up with nothing.

Anyone here got any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't do a whole lotta cabling, but that sure is one heck of an interesting (and long) thread.

some nice fab on jomoco's alignment tool. just another thought, if you use some pcs of thin wall electrical conduit in the 3-4" size and fab it the same way, an 18v drill will fit inside the tube an it will eliminate the hassle of air lines and supply bottles. just a thought. in reading the original post, i am surprised that the alignment would need to be so critical, but it may be so.

I dunno, i got a 19.2 volt cordless drill from Crapsman and I drill through pretty much anything. Steel, wood, trees, concrete no problem. People are always telling me I can't of course so I wonder what I am doing wrong.

A friend of mine was telling me I needed a hammer drill for concrete. Really?
