Another thing is that if you buy the trailer and you don't like it then it will have a higher resale value relative to what you bought it for compared to a truck. It's not unusual to resell one for the same money you baught it for.

Another good point Hermann. I thought my father was the only guy named Herman LOL Only 1 N is his name though.

For those of you who prefer the dump/chip truck, I'm assuming that you go to the job with a chip truck and the chipper in tow. Small to medium limbs are chipped, what do you use to haul the "big" wood from the job site? Do you make a return trip?

Jeff

I honestly try to get the homeowner to keep the wood. I tell them if I have to haul it away I would have to charge extra. Many times the customer will have a friend, neighbor,or relative that will get the wood from them for free. I also tell them to keep the wood and if they get someone to come and get half the wood, I can return to pick up what is left, for less money that hauling it all.

If I have a job that I need to use the chipper. One that is a long way from home, I chip the small stuff and then use the prentice grapple to load the large stuff on top.

Depends on how much wood is there. If there is not too many pcs we throw them in the chip truck. If there are many/large pcs we return with dump trailer and power trac if we do not have it there already.

Thanks guys, these were the answers I was looking for. Sounds like my logic for a trailer purchase is making more sense (at least it is to me). If the job is small enough, chipper and chip truck (in my case my pick up with a box) will handle it. I know unloading it is a PITA, but for now I'll have to put up with it. If it's a large job I'll either return (with the trailer) for the big wood or bring the chipper and trailer with 2 trucks to start with. Bringing 2 trucks to the job is not that big of a deal because either one or both of my sons are usually there to work with me. I'm sure a a dump for the chips would be nice, but being in it part time I have to watch my pennies!!! :D

Thanks, Jeff

PS The trailer might be nice to deliver firewood if I chose to get into it. :)

Here is another option for you. (as if you need more to think about) Lol. I thought very seriously about these. They ran around $2200. They do look pretty sweet!

They do seem costly. But, you would never buy another one. They just bolt on. When you get a new truck, just unbolt and reinstall on the new truck! Or, I gotta believe they would add big money to resale value of truck.

I thought hard about those too Eric. I think if I had a 3/4 ton truck I would have went for one. I just didn't see putting a dump mechanism on a half ton truck.
