The "Pitching Out" is definatly a sign of a borer. Pick it out to see if there is any "Frass" or sawdust from the bug.

See if you can find the Johnson and Lyons book on tree insects, the disease book is just as good.

by Warren T. Johnson, Howard H. Lyon (Photographer), is an excellent reference book. Our branch sells them (that and the sister book, <u>Diseases of Trees and Shrubs</u>) to students every year for $55/book, but they retail for $70 on Amazon.com and BN.com. Periodically, you can find them for a discount on those sites.
