Looks to me like it has a new piston or at least a new set of rings. I could be mistaken but I have not seen a 660 piston with grooved rings.

I can buy new for 980.00 why spend so much for used ? People spend to much for saws on ebay. I did get two saws so far this year but always figure putting money in them. Got one know waiting for piston.

yeah i know i rushed into that one, i've been watching the 660's on ebay and local for a while now, last time one was up for sale local was probably 3-4 months ago. the sad part is i had a bad feeling as soon as i hit that bid button then hoped someone would out bid me. at this point i'm kicking myself for not picking the one off the dealers shelf. at this point i'm leaning more toward sending the saw back and continuing the hunt for a better saw.

Then I would just send it back. Ebay will side with you, as they should. You have been slightly screwed over IMO. Just give the guy a chance to make it right with you before you hit him with a neg or anything like that. Does the guy sell alot of saws? If not, maybe he got it at an auction and never looked at the filter. Could happen, but not likely. Tell him all the different problems and ask him how he wants to try to resolve it. It has a crack in the filter cover also just in case you did'nt notice. 130 comp is getting low. If your reading is accurate, then that saws been ran hard.

so i got the 660 in today and couldnt wait to try it out, but had to run out the door before i could. but before i did i noticied the felling dawgs were mis matched, then found the oil plug was mangled and even had a hole in it. then continued to look and found hey theres no air filter ether. while i was out i couldnt help but wonder what else was wrong. i came back and started it up thankfully it did. i let it idle for a little bit shut er off and took it inside for a compression test. compression read 130psi after maybe 10 seconds of running and then a couple minutes for me to bring it downstairs and prep it for compression testing. so my question is do i return it? ask to be refunded some to get the parts fixed or just leave it be and chaulk it up to a learning experience?

I would retest the compression with the saw stone cold and with a different, known good compression tester. A lot of testers will read low for a variety of reasons.
The Piston and cylinder look fine BTW. Overall the saw doesn't look too bad, I would look to get a few bucks back for the items that "were not as described", But otherwise it seems to be a fair deal. You would be overreacting to return it.

this is why i like coming here, i got so stuck on the appearence so badly i overlooked pulling the muffler.

the piston shot got kind of blurred out but there are some light marks on the piston.

Looks like it ate a lot of sawdust you said it had no air filter that is a problem and who does that?

Thats a rare buy for a new one though. Most people are looking at 1100+ for a new 660. Hard to shuck out coin like that sometimes.;)

I would not have been happy with that price/condition.

130 psi is low, not "good" compression. No air-filter might be the reason. It's pretty hard to tell from just the pics, but the cylinder looks kind of scored.

Nothing in the ad mentioned the cracked cover, missing air-filter, other issues. Let's rewrite the ad, now that you can see the actual condition From:

STIHL MS 660 CHAINSAW THIS IS A GOOD RUNNING SAW HAS A NICE 25" BAR AND CHAIN, COMPRESSION IS GOOD OILER WORKS GOOD NORMAL WEAR NO RESERVE $25 SHIPPING IN THE 48 STATES I SHIP WITH IN ONE DAY OF PAYMENT LOCAL PICK UP IS OK ALSO

If it was advertised correctly, would you and the other bidders have run it up to $690?

I think I would negotiate with the seller for a discount, or else refund it. Looks like about a $400 saw to me, but the market is a little goofy at the moment.

If Im not mistaken, thats not an OEM piston either. I think the woodland pro has the groove in the rings.

that was actually one of the reasons i went with the guy, there were a lot of saws sold and a lot of parts purchased, i figured at the worst the guy may have done some work on it to fix it up so i was betting it was a safe risk... this is why i never gamble.....

also the compression tester is only 3 months old and one of the ones recomended on here.

Yea, the dude got you pretty good. Thats about a 400 dollar saw IMO.

I would be contacting him again.

i agree, if the ad read like that it would have been a whole different bidding, theres a 660 on there now where it says saw has a scored piston and cylinder and has been hovering at 300 for the past two days

just ran another comp test with it being dead cold is pulling 125#

sure looks like someone was in that saw once before, It might just be the pics but the cyl bolts don't look OEM STIHL either, never seen a stihl bolt with serrated sides.

With eBay, the feedback rating is very important and most sellers will work with an unhappy buyer so as not to get negative feedback. I think that this saw would fit into the "not as described" category. The seller should be willing to return the saw based on that. Maybe you could pay the shipping both ways and he gets the saw back in the same condition it was so it should still be "worth" what it was before.

If he won't work with you, well, there are other options. don't wait too long to do something though.

I really think that he should be reasonable about it and maybe you know stuff about the saw he didn't. If you can't resolve it, you paid too much but still have a saw that can probably be fixed up and give good service in the future. ie, you aren't out the whole purchase price. I would certainly try to return it though.

If your not happy with it you paid too much.

You paid $5 more than I did and got a 25" B&C.

But mine was woods-ported and muf modded by Brad. Here's the thread it came from:http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=109333, with pics.
When I got it it was a little dirtier, but not much. I got it about 23 Oct so the price is current. Not like my other one for $515 last January.

Good luck
