Man, Stihl prices defy logic. It is bad enough that used Stihls commonly fetch 80-90% of NEW value on Ebay. Why anyone would pay that much with the risk of getting a damaged or misused saw is beyond me. But the NEW prices on Stihl saws are even weirder at the Ebay Store. A NEW MS361 is selling for $621, while a NEW MS390 is selling for $650.

The 361 is the better saw at a cheaper price. Though I can get either one a lot cheaper here in town at the local Stihl dealer (no shipping and no sales tax in Oregon). The 390 is more like $480 and the 361 is like $580. I am stihl debating if the 361 is worth the extra $100 clams... the 390 has a larger displacement engine (less power though; de-tuned?). After killing my wrist starting our MS290 I want a larger model with the decompression valve.

But but but... I could have a 390 and a crisp $100 bill in my hand! :jester:

And have the same headaches as your 290. It is the same saw (390) as your 290 with a bigger piston and cylinder.

Go for the 361. I got to run one and I want one....

Go for the 361.

I believe there might be a little more wiggle room in your $580 price. I just bought a new 361 for $539 cash, after talking with the owner.

Happy shopping

yeah, when I joined this site I had two saws. Then I sold one. And bought 4 more. :D

The Stihl Lady splained to me... the 361 is a PROFESSIONAL saw with a chromed piston and cylinder, a proven performer. The 390 is a bare aluminum cylinder and piston. Which do you think will wear quicker? You must add longevity to your equation, $400 every 5 years is more expensive than $600 for 10.

I am even starting to look at the hotsaw.com website more often these days... :chainsaw:

You better put your wallet in a safe place and but AS and ebay on blocked sites to prevent further damage :hmm3grin2orange:

24-25 bar is what I want...

About the most I'd wanna put on the 361 (or 390) is a 24-25 in. bar, even here in the soft-wood west. I cut mostly doug fir and alder, but also some really hard madrones and oaks. The Olympic is DOA with a dead ignition, and I do not wanna mess with it any more. I can use the bar off of that as it is pretty new with a new chain. I liked that bar size on that saw, which is what I have been looking to replace (and augment the 290 with).

no, the 390 has the same cylinder lining the 361 does. I assure you it is not bare aluminum...

The 361 has a mag crankcase, whereas the 390 is a plastic case with the engine cradle set in it.

And you'll kick yourself every day afterword as well. You've got a 290 now? The 390 has all the same problems the 290 does. The 390 isn't detuned, it's just not as efficient engine as the smaller 361. The port design is different. If you're even thinking about the 361 get it. Forget the $100 in this case. It's the best $100 you'll ever spend.

As far as ebay prices, they're there because idiots continue to pay them because they don't know any better. I would pay cash money to see the looks on their faces when they take their shiney new, ebay bought saws into a dealer for a tune up or because they can't figure out how to start them, and see their saw sitting on the shelf for less money. Serves 'em right.

Get the 361!:greenchainsaw:

I agree with Jeff, and there are lots of other differences also, that makes the 361 a much nicer saw - better anti-vibe, better air filter system, a pound less weight (more difference than Stihl states), etc.

Another thing, I doubt that your old bar can be used on the Stihls - different tail pattern/bar mount. Well, maybe, if you have it modified.

I believe that the cylinder lining is Nikasil, much harder and more wear resistant than chrome.....

It became available in the late 1960s I believe, and at least Jonsereds used it by 1970.

Ive noticed its the homeowner models that go well over what you can get them new for.

310 selling for $430
170 going for $250
180 selling for $275

Ebay homeowner pricing

Yah, I bet there are people out there that think a Stihl 390 is BIGGER than a 361, becasue well, the number 390 is HIGHER than 361! Therefor, it must be bigger, newer, and more expensive!

This guy would believe it:
