I heave read that Husqvarna and Stihl sell around the same # of saws according to popularity polls.

Ebay seems to consistantly have far more Stihl's for sale than Husky's.

Here are the totals at the moment.

Gas
Other Brands (420)
Stihl (287)
Husqvarna (121)
McCulloch (81)
Homelite (77)
Poulan (63)
Echo (46)

I would like to get input from the forum as to why this is so.

My first guess would be that the Stihl owners are not as happy as Husky owners. However I am interested in other folks thoughts on this.

I don't follow ebay, but I've heard of people using the name "Stihl" in their ads just to get eyeballs looking at it, like "chainsaw, not Stihl".  Of those that are actually Stihl saws, what percentage of them are old models, current models that have been (ab)used professionally for a couple of seasons and then rotated out, etc.?

Good point about the "like Stihl" and "Not Stihl", Glens. Did you know it is actually against ebay policy to make a comparison to a similar product for the purpose of attracting attention? Obviously ebay does not have the resources to enforce that rule!

I have noticed that the Stihls that I see, about half are older models. I don't see too many older Huskys....but they are there. It seems like there are also more Stihls that are in pieces or needs work than any others. One can definately find a good deal on there. Back in 1999, there was only 4 pages of chainsaw stuff - and that included the Chainsaw Massacre crap. Now there are over 44 pages last time I looked. There are also a whole bunch more Stihl dealers availible then Husky ones.

Stihls on e-bay

I have bought 3 Stihls on e-bay.They were all advertised honestly, and needed work. All in all,I have had good success, because of the parts availability. My suggestion is,if you are not a saw mechanic, don't buy a fixer -upper,because you will have a great deal of labor involved in the repairs .This fact,is a moot point to me,because it's my hobby.and I enjoy it,but not all people are like that.I might also point out, that in this part of the country, stocking Husky dealers are a rarity.

I agree with the words said before, but the true fact is that Stihl sells better
on E-Bay. Husqvarna has more burnt up saws in the junkpiles, more different
models, mixing of several brands painted Orange, and that dam Poulan smell
to them that makes them not as desirable sale wise. These many factors
add up to make this a reality.

When I rotate my saws out They go straight to ebay I have gotten as much as 70% the price of a new saw for the old ones sold on ebay. Why? I have no clue i sold a 2 yr old MS200T a few months ago and got 371.00 for it.It ran perfect had a new bar and was always maintained.

i'm looking for project saws myself right now on Ebay, i've seen only one or two Jonsereds in the past couple days out of hundreds of saws.

I wouldn't say it's because Stihl owners aren't as happy with their saws. Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Stihl been the top seller in saws for many many years straight now? Being the top seller means you'll have more saws on the market-new and used. It could be just the opposite. Owner loyalty. My first saw was a MS 310. It's a good saw for what's it's designed for, but since I've bought it I've caught the "let's cut tons of wood and buy a bunch of saws" bug and I need a bigger, better saw. Therefore, my 310 is for sale, and I'm getting a brand new MS 361. You may just see my 310 on ebay because I'm buying a new Stihl and not trading in the old one. And as has already been said on here, many, many of those Sthils are older models. I just bought an 020 and have bought a ton of parts for my 056 (soon to be 056 Super). I'd say that something like 75-80% of the Sthils on there are better than 10 years old. Maybe it's just that there's that many Stihls that are still in somewhat working order after 20 years.

Can you guys tell I'm a Stihl guy? Nothing against Husky's or even the Poulan Wild Thing, I'm just a Stihl guy.

Take care all,
Jeff

I have watched eBay for a couple of years and participated as well. If the saw is part of a business plan or a very important part of your family or farms requirements, I wouldn't buy a later model saw on eBay. Partly because they go cheaper at the local auctions where you can evaluate them up close AND for a few more buck you can buy new. That thought process is what I did buying a new Husqvarna last year after watching lots of auctions & comparing the them with good deals at places like Alemia in Colorado...If the saw is a part of your life and as critical as they are to my family buying new is worth the couple of hundered bucks.

The possible exception is if you need a large saw for the occasional job. I can say a FEW sellers are so honest and will comunicate to where there are times when buying eBay used large saws can pay off...Saw King is one. I have bought a few things from him and the descriptions are on the CONSERVATIVE side...I would consider a saw from him for serious work over a new saw as he will communicat honestly enough for you to make an informed decision.

Now my hobby of collecting old saws & motorcycles for the purpose of solving their mechanical puzzle and bringing them back to life is a whole nother story. Ebay is gold for that hobby. I do find oldie but goldies locally sometimes but the variety available on eBay along with the contacts for parts is amazing for the collector like me. Ebay is actually a very important to me in that arena. BOTH for motorcycles and saws.

I would have to agree with Walter,Rich{SawKing]has always treated me real honestly. He must come across thousands of older ,large saws, out there in the tall timber country. In these parts, the big direct drives were almost non existent, but the mid size[McCulloch 250 ,Homelite xl ,etc.] were and are quite common ,and can be acquired cheaply at auctions, garage sales, etc.I have had quite a few given to me,simply because people can't make them run,and they are out dated ,and heavy.Back to the e-bay thing, you could put together some pretty good saws,if you have the knowledge and patience. It helps to know the weak points of different saws.An example is the 042-048,have a case sealing problem and ignition issues, with the SEM module. It seems a lot of 066's have ragged out top ends[these things see a lot of hard service,]and the list goes on.To me,it's a great adventure,as I have had a life long fascination of mechanical things, but it's not for everybody.

I would agree that there is an advantage but anyone who has some experience in the saw biz will know a good deal when they see it - regardless of brand.

yep fish .. the carolinas got more forestland than you would think..
most of the big stuff around here has been harvested but replaced by 10 to 40 yr old trees.. im about to start stocking a hidden camp, not 10 miles from albemarle..once i hit the woods, i can be there a day a week ,no matter..
nobody knows im there..kinda makes me wonder how many others do that.got a little time now cause work is slow..
on the saws..bigger ebay saws tend to be as stated before.. if its a pro type saw its probably been proed to death,or nearly. unless you are a mechanic,i think your best bet is one of the people on here that sell used saws..its the safest bet i know on used saws ..think about it..jmo
