The points and cond. are likely NLA from Echo anyway, so I would suggest
you get an ignition {atom} madule for @ $15 or so One from Echo would be
@ $40. Some of the vendors here probably could sell you one, or
your local saw/mower shop could get them.

dtnodya, are you out there mate, I still need your help and or anyone else on the forum who may have been watching my never ending saga.
I`m still mucking around with this damn Echo chainsaw.
I stripped the carby and completely cleaned it, taking note of the filter Bob mentioned. The carby inside was suprisingly clean inside.
I now have the saw running again and idling, but it won`t throttle on.
I`ve tried adjusting the mixture, but it does`nt appear to change anything.
I`ve tried a different spark plug and it still does the same thing.
I`ve also tried to remove the flywheel so I could check the points, but I need a puller to remove the flywheel so I bombed out there.
When I start the saw, I give it full choke and when it fires I push the choke in and the saw idles, but as it idles, it appears to not be firing on every rotation as if the thing is shorting out in someway. Could that be points, or perhaps a magneto problem.?
I feel that I am THIS close from getting the thing going, but I need someone smarter than me to point me in the right direction.
Archie.

Clean the coil contacts (where the wires connect), clean the coil itself, clean where the coil mounts to the block, then re-position the coil so that it is closer to the flywheel. I bet that helps.

The coil/air gap should be set around 0.3 to 0.4 mm (0.012 to 0.016 in.) ... Use a feeler gauge or a playing card.

The Echo 351VL

I would like to thank, dtnodya, Bob and fish for their generous help and advise re the 351VL Eccho chainsaw of mine.
Which one of you said don`t give up on it.? Those words were in the back of my mind everytime I tried to start the darn thing.
I stripped and cleaned the carby as you suggested and finally managed to start the thing, but it still would`nt run on. I tried removing the flywheel as you suggested dtnodya, but having not removed it for years, it would`nt budge, so I made up a simple pulley and Bob`s your uncle.
Fish, you were right, the points were badly worn and NLA, so I did as you suiggested and looked for an electronic ignition system, small enough to fit the saw.
As luck would have it, my local motor mower dealer had one and only one in stock. They are NLA he told me.
I had to do some small modifications and re wire the saw which was easy enough to do, and with trepidation I pulled the choke out and pulled the starter cord and away she went, first pull. She rev`s like she has never revved before and runs like a bobby dazzler.
She`s a great little saw and is ideal for cutting smaller firewood. The bigger stuff I cut with my 045AV Stihl.
I`m really chuffed that I finally managed to get the Echo to run, so thanks again to the above guy`s I mentioned for their generous and invaluable help and their encouragement, without their help the saw would most likely have finished up down the tip.
