Echo Chainsaw Horsepower Data Needed

I really like a lot of the echo lines of equipment, I have a small 25cc trimmer I bought 20 years ago and it won't die. You pay a little more and get something decent and it lasts and is reliable and worth fixing if something does happen. I use their black fuel line, very good stuff. I would rather have a cs590 over say a rancher saw from Husky or Stihl to be honest. When I see them for sale cheap, I buy them and flip them a lot. Great bang for the buck.

Yea I have a trimmer from the early 90's. Ran a brush blade on it for along time. Only a cable and fuel lines/grommet and primer bulb and it still starts in a couple pulls. And definitely cs,590 ftw. Mine hasn't let me down yet.

The 590 in most sites I've seen was rated at or around 4hp. I honestly think the stated hp is underrated, another reason why I don't trust most paper specs. IME stock for stock it'll easily outcut a 261 (4hp) in all but the smallest wood where the 261 can rev high, outcut a 391 (4.4hp) pretty easily in all conditions, wipe the floor with a 290 (3.8hp) in all conditions, and outcut a 362 (4.7hp) with long bars or in big wood, the 362 is a touch faster in small wood. And a 400C (5.4hp) is a decent chunk faster than a muffler modded 590

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of 1st hand experience I'm seeking as i cannot decide how to fill a hole in my lineup. I "need" a 24/25" saw for felling a few things where an 18 has left me lacking confidence. I also "want" a higher HP saw that will buck faster than my 50cc class saws. If I ignore cost, I'm torn on a 590,620 or an ms400c-m. The economy of the 590 and it's reputation for outsized performance is right up my ally, but for some reason the substantial hp advantage and the hp/lb ratio on the Stihl are making me willing to ignore the price. Now, if I'm willing to spend for the ms400, I guess I should be willing to consider the 620. Any feedback on whether the 620 can run with the ms400?

Go with the 620 over the 590. It has a 2 ring piston, better coil with more timing, and wakes up nicely with a muffler mod. They really wake up with mild porting.

If you’re ok with the extra weight over the 400, and value the simpler design and adjustable carb, the 620 is probably for you. The $ saved over the 400 can be put toward more chains, bars, maybe porting.

If you’re going to leave it stock though, and have the $ for the 400, it’s really the better saw. The power/weight will be noticeable on your back once past a couple hrs cutting continuously. No having to think about carb adjustments over time with the Mtronic either.

I definitely won't be porting either one. I'm a light enough user that voiding a warranty discourages me from going there on a new saw. Old, out of warranty, or saws i bring back from dead are fair game for all sort of mods but not new ones.

The weight is a huge factor in every saw i buy. I classify saws primarily by weight and then seek the best performer that fits say a 10 lb limit. I bought a 2511t over anything from stihl for this reason. Best top handle at any price to me. The ms400 beats the 462 for me using the same criteria. It's also why I just can't get interested in anything from Husky.

As much as I like my other echo equipment, I think you are cementing my mind on the 400. We'll see if I come to my financial senses before one follows me home....

Does Stihl offer a metal handle one can buy to replace the plastic handle that comes on the Stihl ms400?

I understand why he wants better handle.

I still dont understand why they do that on their pro saws. I hated that plastic handle on my 361.

Still doing it on 362 400 almost 800-1K saw and plastic just isnt right.

Least echo put it on their cheap model due to plastic handle is cheaper to make. Just wrong on a costly pro saw.

I pulled a plastic handle and swapped and I could feel more vibrations through the plastic handle over the rubber coated metal handle. Due to echo still using rubber antivibes.

Now with stihl coil spring av now only thing keeping those vibrations at bay.
