I picked up an older CS-302 as a project, figuring I would put it through some light use clearing out smaller trees and limbs in my overgrown backyard. The previous owner used it but once or twice a year and it had been sitting for some time, it didn't start or run when I first got it. It's got an Oregon bar and chain. Judging from the serial number and lack of a brake it must be one of the mid-70s models. I replaced some fuel lines and the filters, and the rubber and screen in the carb, adjusted all gaps, installed a new plug. It cuts great and starts every time (I've used it to fell several small trees and also a couple stumps) - but strangely it wants to either die after idling a few seconds, or if the trigger is held slightly it runs at full throttle. Seems it's all or nothing - not exactly a safe use scenario. Perhaps I didn't clean the jets out thoroughly enough. It will be a few days before I pull it apart again, so I figured I'd post some images and see what other folks had to say about it.

Thanks s sidewall! I just took a cursory look over it, and it looks like I set my throttle trigger rod up in the wrong hole on the carb. I changed it to a neutral setting and started it up without the bar on and it idles perfectly, the carb adjustments are responsive and it's running really great now. I'm currently repainting the old bar black with some leftover acrylic-enamel rattlecan that I just found, and have a new 76-link micro-chisel chain on order as well. I'm excited to have a solid, reliable little yard saw. It's definitely got a lot more use ahead of it now that most of the light brush is cleared from our lot.

Heck yeah! That photo makes this little saw look like a champion, wow. I just took it out to do some test cuts and tuning - I'm liking it a lot, especially for how easy it is to handle.

It took me awhile to see where the muffler was then I saw the exhaust port exit, then i knew it was on the bottom like my old Mac. That should last ya a good long time.

I just got my hands on one too. I was on a job site and the previous owner offered it to me while on his way to the dumpster with it. I thought, "pretty sad shape, but maybe".
The blade was rusted to the bar, so nothing moved. I'm tearing it down carefully and cleaning. We'll see if this old dog still hunts!
Any idea exactly what the MFG date is, other than '77-'83? The SN#0168156. I'll post an update when I get teeth to timber.
