Good to know on the 490 mm. I got a low usage 1 this summer just to try an Echo saw out and was not impressed.......

Looks like springtime surgery will be a must.
30mins can be done. Just like 501 one shown.

Whole series cant breath stock. Remove pipe inner. I cut the slit in deflector then opened like last pic.

I have a modded 490 and love it. I have no experience with the other newer Echo saws tho.
Muffler mod, cut .035” off the base, raised & widened exhaust, raised transfers, timing advance, removed limiters from carb, and opened up the filter holder a bit.

The muffler mod on the CS-490 is a minor improvement, making more noise that engine power. Dyno Joe had one on his dyno if you want to no how pathetically anemic they really are in stock form. He compares it with the CS-4910 and 501P nearly as I can remember.

I'd add here in the defense of the CS-490 that Echo outfitted a lot of them with a 20" bar. That saw isn't in that league and it just drags them down even more. Even my much faster and stronger Husqvarna CP 55's and Echo CS-510 fair best with an 18" .325 bar. The CS-490 would have been a LOT better off with a 16" .325" bar/chain set-up right out of the box. It that configuration it would make a dandy little limbing saw.......IMHO......

I use my 490 with an 18" and 20" bar.
20" so I don't have to reach down as far to buck smaller 10-16" trees.
Anything larger and the 620P comes out to play.
The 490 is very dependable but is not all that fast.
I was going to try a muffler mod on the 490, but if it does not make a huge difference, I won't bother.

Retuning the 490 from factory lean certainly helped a bit though.

Good to know. My muffler modded 490 is definitely pretty dang loud.

I though my 490 had a fuel delivery problem and rebuilt the carb and entire fuel system. Removed the limiters and retune, new air filter, new plug with a little improvement but just still a bit gutless.

Removed muffler for a look see and looks perfectly normal. I may just do a P/V test just to rule that out....... Still gonna do a MM tho!

Dont be fooled by 1 naysayer mod that 490 muffler. Stock for stock even with both mufflers all bogged down. The 490 about .4hp off the 4910 and 501.
Coil limited on 490 too. I found in low 12's best on it.

491 = 490.

490 if you read is a detuned 500P. No clue on that one. What they did differently on 500P

Just do the simple muffler mod like shown that I show above on 501. It really helps echo.

Dont even get into the porting of them. Holy geez even the 490 gets close to 5hp like 4910 etc.

16" and 18" set ups. Get you some good chain. 325 LGX LPX RS C33 all full chisel.
Lot of it is their stock chains suk they come with. 490 and 4910. 501 comes with better chain.

Besides the p+c differences and limited coil on 490. Look at the 3 slits the 490 suppose to breath out of. SMH.

4910 501 still bad too with one more slit added.

Plus that inner tube that needs tossed out.

Open the front of deflector like a normal one like on the huskys.

Does the 4910 4 slot fit on the 490 or should I just open the one on the 490 a bit ?

Couldnt tell ya. Gone gone.

My 490 came with a modded muffler from last owner.

Even if it did. You want to open the sucker up like shown on my 501. Toss inner tube and open the front up like a normal dang saw comes.

Screw that still small inner pipe as a outie. I'd open the deflector up like a husky one.

My 490 came with this dang pipe stuck in it.

490 pipe and open 501 deflector. Toss that tiny pipe deal.

I upgraded to the deflector from the Shindaiwa 452. Part number A313001460 if you are interested. The part is only $5 or 6$. Way less restrictive and looks very clean.
