I've always heated them red with a torch and quenched in water and repeated. Then scraped with a utility blade on a flat surface. Repeat the process as needed.

It seems to work. But is there a better way? I hate buying carb kits when only the screen is plugged with varnish. Will a certain type of solvent remove everything but the metal in the screen itself?

I would imagine brake cleaner would work well.
