It made our local saw shop have a sale on 440s at a great price and I wasn't planning on it but the price was so good that I bought one for me and then one for work. They were almost sold out as of last Wed. The 440 is THE saw used on the landings around here.

I've never operated an 044/ms 440 very much. However what little I have they seemed to pretty much hold true to the 038 mag.Light weight, reliable, plenty of power.Actually what more could you want other than perhaps a cheaper price .

440 Stihls are worshipped around here like bronze buddha statues are in Thailand.

Me to other guy-" What did you bring to cut with?"

Other guy- " MS440 "

Me and other guy-"Chorus of Tim Taylor Tool Time grunts"

I must admit that they sure do have a business like exhaust note in the woods. I always thought that the trees knew the gig was up when you got two of them saws wailing in unison, their branches would droop and leaves drop in defeat.:chainsaw:

Guess someones figured out a way around net sales.
What I wonder is if the warrentee from Stihl would apply in this case,I doubt it.For that matter old Gyp must have sold a train car load of Stihls over the internet until somebody whined about it.

In a way I can understand Stihls policy in protecting a dealers turf but in a way I do not.It would seem to me that if the price as dictated by Stihl were the same then what's to point of limiting local sales to a dealer who may be less than pleasant to deal with.

All dealers, saws or otherwise are not the same.A good one is real prince a bad one can be another word that starts with a p but rhymes with pink.I hope some Stihl dealers are reading this post and take heed.

Here is one of the Brand new 440's being found on ebay now days. Seems to be new 361's and 460's now days too. Guess someones figured out a way around net sales.

This is nothing new. There have been numerous cases of people listing brand new stihls on ebay in the past. They just don't tend to be selling them for very long. It looks like this guy has been selling them for a little while, but I'd be suprised if he lasts much longer.

The only good reason for ending an era is because something better has come along. I hope that's the case for you Stihl guys.

From information I have in 2009 there will be drastic changes made again because of EPA. They will all be running on the lean side that will decrease the overall life, constipated & weigh more that the previous early models. If that is improved I fail to see it. :buttkick:

Now this brings up an interesting side note, closely related to the auto industry.A majority of modern car engines run by the aid of knock sensors incorperated into the electronic engine controlls to prevent spark knock pre ignition etc.The engines operate at a much higher temp than they did say 20 years ago. They seem to last inspite of all this that we,including myself, tend to think is unconventional thinking.

It makes a person wonder perhaps if coated pistons etc would aid in preventing a lean burn situation on these future engine designs used on saws.Well, time as it always does, will tell the tale.
