Ok, I've got a friend with a lemon scented gum (about 50yrs old and roughly 20" dbh)
that has got two large wounds and I'd like some idea what is going on. They haven't occurred due to damage, they just sort of appeared. One on each side of the tree.
Pics probably best explain it -

kino reaction to an infection possible from the nursery stock recently planted around the tree?
is that the natural soil level? or has it been altered and do they understand not to be using artificial fertilisers around a euc?.

looks as if a bobcat or similar hit it causing the wound and the miniature willow myrtles were known to be carrying diseases from nursery stock at least 5 years ago first saw the warning would have to backtrack through my arb school notes but could be done.
