How does October 27th sound?Same sort of setup as last year. Do some timed cuts on some nicely aged hickory logs.
Cut as much firewood as you wish to cut..
I plan on hauling a few loads of firewood to The widow lady again this year.
I will have the staging area closer to the road this time.(who knew it was ever going to thaw?)
I will provide lunch and drinks.Probably a big pot of soup or Chili this year.
Hope to meet a few new faces, and see all the ones from the first GTG
Located about 30 miles south of Indy.

Ha,well that's one way to eliminate "trick" chains.Dry hickory is just about like cutting concrete, clean the cutters right off of a race chain.

It is a very benevolant thought to cut some firewood for the widow though.

I'll be there. It was good fun last time, and putting together some loads of firewood to donate was quite satisfying.

A few thoughts:

1. Since this is more of a working GTG than a racing GTG, perhaps we can have some sort of "realistic" racing activities - limbing, bucking, stuff like that.

2. I'd like to have a 40cc +/- 5cc class for limbing saws in either limbing or cutting limbs into firewood. Mark (username Luke) and I were thinking of doing some side-by-side comparison of my 238se, his 242 and 401, and saws of that class. If someone could bring a Husqvarna 340/345/346, Stihl MS230, or something like that, it might make for an interesting comparison.

3. I'd like to see some vintage firewood saws out there for folks to try out and compare, like the XL12, 10-10, Sears/Roper 3.7, etc.

I might actually be able to come to this one. I took the week of the 28th off so I can probably swing Sat off. Never been to one of these GTG, so it might be nice for me.

Anyhoo, if I do come what would people like to see? This is my arsenal, pretty much an all inclusive list. Just about all run, a couple don't and a few are NIB.

Computeruser,
What do you think about carpooling? I have a 346 for the limbing contest, as well as an older 540 Homey. Sounds like a good time, might be possible for a Michigan car pool.

Ha ha you just want to see me disgraced with my old crapsman/roper 3.7 again. It has not even been out of the case since the last GTG.
In your 40 cc class.. why not the 5100. after all everyone here wants to compare a 346 and a 5100.. LOL I have some baby scales we can use to see actual weights in the fields..
So maybe it should be a 45 cc class+- 6
Yes I will have plenty of time to drag some decent logs up to the staging area for guys to race on.some lets say 8 inch stuff for the 5100 and under stuff. and I will see if I can find some nice thick hickory around 18 inches for the bigger toys.It will be harder to find a nice log in the 18 inch category, as they were sold for lumber, but we will see what we can do.

I'd actually like to try my hand at the 3.7. It may not be a screamer, but it is a durable design that cut a lot of firewood over the years, and they made a lot of 'em. No disrespect to the racing crowd, but my interest in racing in clear, soft cants was short-lived...about as short as my patience for making up loops of race-only chain! I personally find running the different saws in real-world conditions to be far more interesting and informative. This is part of why a working GTG like this is so appealing to me - I really enjoyed the last GTG where we were trading saws with someone whose saw you've never run, cutting a bit of firewood with it, and getting a real sense of its performance, ergonomics, and abilities. So I'm all for bringing out all the old, non-fast saws that can be found, if only to see what my parents and grandparents were running way back when. Incidentally, I emailed Al today, since he hasn't been on AS in a while, and hopefully he can come down and we can run our Remington PL-5s, too.

Let's do a 50cc comparison, as well, since I should have enough fuel through my freshly rebuilt 154 to be a fun comparison to the 5100s. Both spec out at 3.8hp +/-. And we could also compare to the 346. A mix of 8" and 18" stuff should be perfect for these saws, and if anything larger stuff can be found for the big saws, that'd be interesting, too.

And if I can find a 262xp, or rebuild one between now and then, that would be a fun comparison to a 361 or 357xp. And if we really want to get silly, we can do a bit of log splitter racing, too...well, that might just be too much.

Anyway, it should be fun times and a nice bit of hands-on comparison!

I have my grandpas old Stihl S10

I have not heard it run in several years. That is the saw my grandpa cut a lot of wood with when I was a kid. He managed to wrestle that beast of a saw with just his left hand and a hook where his right one used to be.. (Corn picker accident before I was born)
As for my 3.7. I have owned that saw for over 15 years, it has never ever failed to start.even after sitting for many months on end. It is just one of those old saws that was built to last.Pre-plastic days

I know what your saying Cuser, my saws are work saws first, that run up to 32" b+c's. The 16's only go on for the fun stuff and the adrenaline rush time.
I would put the Ole round chisel or square chisel work chains and cut up some old dry hickory for fun any day:bowdown: , but is 18" as big as you got for a real test;) .
If time allows, we will see you there, if not another day.

I do have one 3ci that I do only cut cookies with now. That P 5000 that was up at the 2 MI shows.

we sold the big part of the log..

All we have left are the tops.. But some have some pretty decent butts on for cookie cutting.

Count me in!

Eric,
That sounds like another great time! Count me in! I also love to cook, so let me know if you would like me to bring some food... or anything else, for that matter.

I got an email from Computeruser saying he wanted to pit his Homelite 200 against one of my ferocious Craftsman Poulans. Although he has excellent taste in small limbing saws with that Homey 200 manufactured back when the company took pride in their product, I might caution him about bringing a knife to a gun fight. ;)

btw, you all might not recognize me since the last GTG - I've lost nearly 130 lbs. Hey, considering my looks, that might not be a bad thing.
