A couple pics of my 1972 Chevy Nova. It was my first car, had it 27 years now. Swapped out the original 307 engine and powerglide transmission for a 383 stroker and TH350 trans with 3800 stall and 3.73 posi. Got the body redone around 20 years ago, fixed a lot of stuff over the years. Mostly just cruise in it now with my family.

Had a 72 Nova with 3speed floor shift and 250 straight 6 my father gave me.He bought it new.For some reason it rusted out around the taillights. I repaired the car and drove it for years, always wondered why it rusted in that area as it was a Florida car.

Sweet! They're cool old cars for sure.

Mine had some rust around the rear wheelwell lip and behind the rear tire. Also a little behind the front tires on the lower fender. I used to repair it each spring myself with bondo, spot putty, sand paper, and some paint I would get mixed up at Painters Supply using the original paint code. Did that for years. Finally when I got a little older and got a better job I saved up some dough and got the body all redone. New reproduction quarter panels, original front fenders and doors from a 1969 Nova from Arizona (rust free), along with a bunch of other stuff (new rear bumper, new windshield, new dash cowl, weatherstripping, etc). No more rust now.

The engine is getting tired though, so I'm planning to pull it this spring when it warms up and have my buddy rebuild it for me (he owns an engine shop nearby). Might go with a little better cam while it's apart, depending on how much $$$ it is. It runs 12.3 in the 1/4 mile, would like to get it into the high 11's.

Maybe some water got stuck up in that area from washing it? Power washing at the coin car wash and water couldn't drain from that area for some reason? Maybe some of the little drain holes were clogged somewhere?

Probable reason. Not a bad running car, no rust anywhere else, about 15 or 16 MPG from what I recall.
None of those cars back then were really great on gas, even with smaller engines.

My 307 used to get around 15mpg roughly. It was a pretty small V8 though.

My 383 is closer to 12-13mpg or so. Not very good. But I have a heavy foot when I drive it too haha!
