Climbing shoes are my fetish.

Most of the time I work in Zamberlan Ladak GTX hikers from REI or my other steady favorites are the Nike ACG Cindercones. They are great shoes if you like to run though trees on the fine limbs.

The Cindercones can be found at www.altrec.com

The only thing I have seen that may be more agile and better for climbing than the Cindercones are the Scarpa Tech Ascent. I'll try to find a pic. I have seen several of the top European climbers wearing them.

These are the Scarpa

I am hunting for a dealer here or in the states. I have found them here, but for €145.

Those cindercones are nice and only $75-ish.

I'll let you know if I find something.;)

Thanks, I appreciate that. I think they may be just a euro model though. Maybe a Canadian dealer. I currently use fiveten mountain master which are bomb proof, but I do not care for the low top in the tree. I also have a pair of fiveten guide almighty, these shoe perform the best, but they just do not hold up well enough. The tech ascent looks like a cross between the two.

I just recieved my cindercones today, and they're comfy...:) Mine cost 109.95 im not sure where you get yours nathan, unless you are speaking foreign currency...

How are the cindercones treating you for work?

I worked alone (only climber) today in a nice biergarten on a sunny day....big oaks, huge chestnuts...

Lots of climbing and good fun in the cindercones:cool:

btw - I got mine at altrec.com but it was quite a while back...

We are probably OT... but,

I am currently wearing these (along with the Lowa Scout II) for 3 season hiking -

These are what I do ice and extreme cold winter mountaineering with, rigid plastic double-boot for crampons

But I really prefer these Makalu's for less-than-extreme winter mountaineering. They take step in crampons well, and are very comfortable (for a rigid boot ;) )

Back to sole stiffness.
The nike cinder cones are said to have: "a thermoplastic shank that extends from the forefoot through the arch for torsional rigidity and superb support".
That sounds like the sole is pretty stiff, or is that just advertising mumbo jumbo?

What is meant by approach, in mountaineering?

Also I noticed two arborist recommendations in the review section. Is one from somebody here?

The gist of most of the comments was they blister your feet while you break them in, but once broken in they are great.
These are not big fluffy K-mart boots, that's for sure.
I've experienced the same thing with new, stiff logger boots. You have to wear them a little at a time until they are broken in. Once they get broken in they are great. Then when they get old and wore out, they start getting sloppy, like those K-mart boots when they are new.

That is the hike up the the vertical element, then you take off the approach shoes and put on the rock shoes, the ones like ballet toe slippers.
