I've used the foam for cosmetic purposes at the request of customers who wanted a "better looking" tree.

A few of them that I have watched over the years turned out really well. One the foam popped out about a year later after a windstorm. The home had sold and the new owner did not want it replaced.

Whatever you do or don't do...just don't breach the CODIT barrier that may well already be in place with any attempt at cleaning out the cavity.
Cavity filling of any kind was discouraged at my College...

One hole which can effectively be plugged with expanda- foam and has great results is THOSE DAM TURBO MUFFLERS!
