Like many co's, I use plywood while stump grinding, to keep the grindings contained. Making 3-4 trips to the backyard with plywood wastes time, so I came up with this. 2 sheets of plywood ripped into 1/3rds. 2 sets hinged together, 2 boards can be supported by notched poles. It folds up to 32.5" and rides on a handtruck.

Pretty cool idea. Do you put a tarp under the wall like painters do to catch the mess? Perhaps take it to the next level and winch the tarp to the truck like a tuna boat hauling fish. That would be the stuff. :)

Hey....!

Hey OR,

That's freeakin cool!

My brother in law has recently gotten himself a Rayco, and grinds on the weekends. We has been talking about the grinding and the mess. Your ingenuity may be appreciated by many a stump grinder guy.

I Made a Folding Frame 8 X 8' Which folds to 4X8' out of 3/4" PVC Pipe and covered with a tarp and secured it to the frame with Tie Wraps. Works well and you can carry it it one hand....

It's at my dads house if it were here I'd get a picture. I Made 2 frames out of 3/4" PVC 1 side was a full square the other was [ <-- Shaped that i put T's on the ends which i Honed out so they would freely turn on the pipe to make it fold.
both have a center support as well. Hmmmmm Confused? After reading this I am.

That's a great idea!

A buddy of mine did roofing for a while. To protect the sides of the houses during tear-offs he took 4x8 sheets and ripped them into 2x8 sheets. Then he used a four inch diameter hole saw to cut handles in each end. That makes it much easier to drag them around.

Instead of using metal hinges I've used ropes. Just drill clearance holes where you want the hinges. Slip the rope through and tie a stopper knot. With just a little planning you can make the folds so that the knots don't interfere.

i had a smiliar idea to that, just never got round to making one. we normally use a beach windbreak

So I ask you guys, is there not a product out there designed and manufactured for this use?

I don't grind stumps, but my Dad does, about once a month, goes and rents a grinder for the stumps he collects during the month previous (He's owns a lawn service in Florida).

One day Dad was grinding a stump in someone's front yard, the wheel of destruction caught a rock and flung it into the client's front door, which was made entirely of glass.

Afer the cleanup of 80,000 pieces of glass (that's how safety glass works) and $550, and the time replacing the door, he was thinking along the lines of some sort of barrier such as that which you guys are describing.

I like the ideas. Keep em coming.

If there's not something commercially available, let's engineer something here on this thread, and create it.

I'm a relative noob to this Photoshop thing, but an eager student.

So,
If there's not something commercially available, let's engineer something here on this thread, and create it.

Whether we do it digitally, or go spend some time in the garage, what's it gonna be? We're definitely not dealing with rokcet siense here. :p

I use a few pcs of plywood hinged together but the tarp idea seems to have merit. Sure would be lighter.

Has anyone had problems with the tarp tearing due to the chips flying against the material?

Which is going to stop rocks better...tarp or plywood? Unless you go out and buy some kind of balistic fabric plywood seems easier. There are some really tough fabrics out there that aren't too expensive but a few minutes with a circle saw and drill with a bit of old rope and you"re setup.
