A stereo shop across the street from my old shop went belly up. They had a large sign with flourescent lights inside and white plastic for the sign. Before the building was demo'd I scavenged the plastic. Turns out to be Delrin I believe. REally tough stuff. I'm told that by a friend that builds signs that the stuff is tough enough to survive a rock at thirty below. Not cheap but durable.

I used hinged plywood pieces for several years-they work fine but are a nuisance. I tried the fabric on a PVC pipe frame-blows around to much in the wind. Most of the time I don't bother but when I need to protect a window or guard against throwing chips into traffic etc, I use OSB or hardboard.

Which is going to stop rocks better...tarp or plywood? Unless you go out and buy some kind of balistic fabric plywood seems easier. There are some really tough fabrics out there that aren't too expensive but a few minutes with a circle saw and drill with a bit of old rope and you"re setup.
The drawback to plywood, besides being heavy is rocks can sometimes bouce off, whereas the tarp "catches" them. I user a 7x10 tarp with 1/2" pvc. two vertical legs go into the horizontal top with elbows. The legs get set over 2 peices of rebar stuck in the ground, and now I have a panel. they roll up nicely, can carry 4 in one arm, or resting on the machine as I roll to the stump. I need to make a couple of rebar posts stuck in a little concrete so I can set up easy on a hard surface. I get tarps cheap so if they wear out thats that. I have been using this setup with a RG-50 with no problems for a couple years now. :umpkin:
