So the foreman cannot check a driving record or you think you know better than your foreman who works all day with the guy?
Jeff

No i do not think i know better then our foreman would about the day to day needs of our CO. in the field and who might fit in the best.

As to checking references, driving records , criminal back grounds and the like i do that because of privacy laws and if the person dose not meet our and our clients standards their is no reason to burden our foreman with it.

Napolean said the surest path to victory is through the proper delegation of authority.

Yeah and look how things turned out for him.

I like to do an "on-the-job" interview. That allows me to see how they work and allows them to see what they are getting into. Most guys that aren't going to cut it make the choice themselves.

If I had a good foreman that I trusted I would let her hire her own crew. (or his)

That is a big one, sometimes there is over delegation. Unless you are big enough to have several crews with a lead foreman to take that from you.

It has been years since I was a crew leader for a company, but I much preferred it when I got to do the final interviews then when they just handed me a spare laborer from the lawn crews.

My biggest problem was with "climbers" who oversold their abilities. I always wanted the "wages commensurate with demonstratable skills of the trade". I.e. you do not get the big pay til you show you are as good as you say you are.

One of the first things I would do is hand over some rope and say "tie some knots"

But the axion is true even if Napolean did not live up to his own words.

If a boss lacks confidence in his men's judgement, he'll waste half his time making sure what is already planned and being done is going well when he should be out making new plans for new things to be done tomorrow.
