Yesterday (Sunday) they took down two more pines and I cut them up this morning with the 028. That saw didn't miss a beat! 16 inch bar was a little small for the big end of the log, but it didn't bog down. This 028 has me thinking about a 361! It don't seem to burn as much fuel as the 455 does. Maybe a bigger tank. I really hate to see my neighbors take these trees down, but it ain't none of my buisness. It really is some beautiful logs there. Here is a link to the top coming down.
that would be a big tree in my neck of the woods lol. I would be looking at Spruce in that dia as most of the Lodge Pole Pines I cut are 12'' at the base and many are just 8''
but they keep there Dia for at least 30'.
By the style of your writing looks like you are having fun!
For me cutting wood is fun I don't make any money on it except for saving on the heating bill and helping corrupt others into my way of thinking.Made my Neighbor change his mind about the MS250 he had. Then he got a 260:)

They also left a line in each tree for pulling after they make their directional cuts. I don't think pulling that rope will determine where that tree is going to fall, not sure why folks do that.

No it will not make a tree go against the hinge, but what it will do quite efficiently is give you the leverage to pull the tree/stem over much easier. It will allow you to leave more hinge(even if these guys didn't) for controlling the fell better. You can pull a stem or whole tree over much easier with a tip line than wedges or pushing against the base. You can also fight leans, or just add a little "insurance" that the tree will go exactly where you want it, especially if windy. Simple function of leverage.......

It isn't a cure for poor felling technique, just an enhancement. I've pulled over by hand with a tip line a tree that a neighbor could not push over with his tractor(yes an accident waiting to happen which is why I bailed him out).

Good on you for helping out the neighbors.
