Location
Perth, Australia
We just had a Cyclone warning in our area.

CYCLONE BIANCA EXPECTED TO IMPACT COMMUNITIES IN THE SOUTH WEST OF WESTERN
AUSTRALIA ON SUNDAY

Bianca will weaken significantly before it reaches the South West. However
there is a significant risk that it will retain cyclone intensity so people
should prepare for:
. DAMAGING WINDS with gusts to 120 kilometres per hour
. VERY ROUGH SEAS and DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS
. COASTAL EROSION and FLOODING OF LOW LYING COASTAL AREAS
. SEVERE to CATASTROPHIC FIRE DANGERS
. HEAVY RAINFALL south of the cyclone with possible LOCALISED FLOODING.

A Cyclone WATCH is current for coastal areas from Jurien Bay to Albany,
including Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton.

At 5:00 pm WST Severe Tropical Cyclone Bianca, Category 4 was estimated to be
545 kilometres west of Carnarvon and
1110 kilometres northwest of Perth and
moving southwest at 30 kilometres per hour.

On Sunday tides between Jurien Bay and Cape Naturaliste are likely to rise
significantly above the normal high tide mark with VERY ROUGH SEAS, DANGEROUS
SURF and FLOODING of LOW LYING COASTAL AREAS. SIGNIFICANT COASTAL EROSION is
possible. HEAVY RAINFALL is also possible on the southern side of the system.
LOCALISED FLOODING is possible but extensive flooding is not expected.

VERY HIGH to SEVERE FIRE DANGERS are likely near the west coast on Sunday.
EXTREME to CATASTROPHIC FIRE DANGERS are likely across inland areas south of a
line from Geraldton to Leonora to Israelite Bay on Sunday.

FESA State Emergency Service (SES) advises that people should start planning
for bad weather and listen for further advice.

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Bianca at 5:00 pm WST:
.Centre located near...... 24.5 degrees South 108.3 degrees East
.Location accuracy........ within 55 kilometres
.Recent movement.......... towards the southwest at 30 kilometres per hour
.Wind gusts near centre... 230 kilometres per hour
.Severity category........ 4
.Central pressure......... 945 hectoPascals

Preparation is the key. May I suggest the following: Fresh supply sharp chains √ Ample volumes high octane and mix oil/ bar oil √ Extra clutches and rims √ Trailer tires/brakes in working condition √ Boots gloves other PPE √ Generous supply of your favorite ale √. Did I forget anything?

Wow Bob, you all have had a heck of a summer!!!

Cheers Guys.

So we're sitting here waiting for this thing and what is crazy is that today the forecast is for a 100F+ day.

The predicted path of the cyclone is shown here and you can see the eye is predicted to pass very close to Perth. It's just been downgraded from a category to 4 to a 3 and is predicted to only be a 1 by the time it crosses the coast, still strong enough to do a lot of damage.

Our last big cyclone that hit Perth was in March of 1978 (Alby). I clearly remember driving home in from work through the cyclone along a road that ran alongside some of Perth's southern beaches and the winds being so strong and the dust being so thick that it was too dangerous to drive more than 20 mph. In the 40 (usually 20) minutes it took me to get home the sharp edges on front of the car were sandblasted back to bare metal and even the windscreen was left slightly hazy. That morning I had left two windows open and across the road there was a big land development and there was a layer 1" of black dust all through the house.

Good / bad news

The good news is the cyclone now has a reduced predicted wind speed when it hits land and this means fewer trees will be brought down (that's the good/bad news).

The arrow shows the predicted path and the red spot shows the location of Perth.

Glad to here all is well.

jerry-

Cheers Jerry.

This afternoon was weird, the temperature was sitting on 105F and it was cloudy and humid. Then we had a brief thunderstorm and the temp fell to 80F in about half an hour, and now 3 hours later it's back up to 86F and 80% humidity and still rising - no winds it's quite calm

The cyclone has been down graded to a category 2 and is still about 20 hours away.

Cyclone update

Further good news is the cyclone is no more and has become a tropical rain bearing depression. Just as well, as the depression is now tracking to pass right over the top of Perth.

Does this mean that there will be no free logs?

Was really hoping the best for everyone down under, but was also hoping to see some really nice wood #### coming from your direction!!!

Hey Bob, is there any way that you can convince the people of Perth that the sound of a chainsaw running is actually the storm coming through? If so, you might still be able get some free logs...Stay safe Bob.

I wish it was that cool over here Bob was out cutting a log with a GB i borrowed in 40c this morning walked inside and the missus thought I had hosed myself down.

Well our cyclone on the west coast turned out to be a fizzer by the time it hit land but the one (Yasi) on the north east coast (Queensland) due to hit tonight is a real humdinger with expected wind speeds of 180 mph and a storm surge on the coat of 10 ft. At those speed I understand the wind sounds like 100 freight trains and unlike a tornado where it's all over in a few minute this can last for hours and there was one in 1874 that sat over the north west coast for 2 weeks and minced everything for a radius of 100 miles. Fortunately there was not much infrastructure around at the time but 69 people died.

Bob,
glad to hear your ok, I saw some damage the other cyclone did, and my knowledge of Australia being what it is, wondered if that was your area.We were visiting relatives out of state and got iced in for a few days with out power. Had to do some cutting, no logs just limbs.

Fortunately it was 2500 miles away in Queensland but it sure did make a mess. Only one person died indirectly when he ran a diesel powered generator in the room he was sleeping in to escape the cyclone. Queenslanders are tough, floods and then more floods and now a cyclone.

Where we live there are two large bushfires burning out of control. Toll so far is 40 houses, no lives lost.
