Bowls.
Chasing down wood on CL is wearing me out. I have very little free time and would rather spend time turning than wood hunting. Everywhere I go, I'm looking at down trees and listening for chainsaws. So when I saw the rigs on Hwy 70... well I got to thinking.... what's my free time worth and would I be better off just buying some logs and using all my time turning bowls. Beyond that, I have to rent a trailer, drive to the spot, bring a buddy, fill up the truck, buy lunch, gas the saw, sharpen the chains, buy the beer, etc... Heck just getting one pickup load averages $75 to $100 (plus 3-4 hours) and how much wood does that yield........... not as much as a rig full done by a pro.

So I was looking for a place to have a load dropped where I could process as needed and then bring to my house to turn. My neighbor would also appreciate less chainsawing in the side yard.

I might just end up buying from a mill as needed. 1) They sell to individuals right?
2) They will custom cut right? I would want the top skimmed off then a 6 inch +/- slab (I would chainsaw to length as needed)

3) So how does it work, will the mill find logs for me based on what I'm looking for (say cherry 14 inch diamter etc..). Or do I find a logger who looks for the trees for me and then delivers to the mill?

See since bowl blanks only need to be as long as the log diameter, I thought it would be cheaper to find reject logs that mills don't want and loggers/landowners are looking to get rid of-- in particular short logs.

So those are my intentions and thoughts. Greatly appreciate the input.

The mill i log for has tons of short logs and cutoffs. All species. Most of it junk, but some could be useful for what your looking for. If you were closer, it would be no problem to get all ya wanted. Cheap. Mostly just to get it out of the way. Right now they just push it down the hill to rot or burn it.
