all i know is i have talked to every lineman i know. and so far everyone here has had different opinions. so i'm not sure how i'll decide. maybe i can try a few out somehow.

A lineman's idea of proper gaffs are different from a treeman's.

I need the length, I don't like to kick out. And I keep em sharp.

Here's a link to a company that has the same kneepads as I have. I can't believe the price! $4.95!!!

They have some pretty good looking prices on blades and in-line skates too if anyone is interested.

All the usual disclaimers...I have no financial or personal connection to the company, blah, blah, blah :)

My steel insert velcro pads hurt from the get go. I used aluminum gaffs for a while and went back to Kleins, mainly because they really stick. I found the weight difference did not matter, it was unnoticeable.

FWIW, I don't like the long Bucks I have-They seem to either sink too deep or not deep enough-If they go in farenough to be stable they are hard to pull out. If they don't go deep my foot is off the spar and the wiggle(and occassionally kick out). I have some short Kleins-they do work but peel bark more than I really like-I have to change my attack angle from what I am accustomed too-then they work okay. My firsts and favorites are my short gaff Brooks. The gaff is shaped differently from the Kleins-much broader-they grab pretty well in thick bark and superbly in thin bark. On the other hand I kicked out multiple times with the short Brooks on that nasty old powerpole I took down last week. I think that may have been the pole more than anything-hard spots mixed with surface cracking that wanted to scale off.

This may be too confusing. Just buy a 110' over center bucket and forget the gaffs.:)

Haha, yah there ain't that much of a price difference, eh? And trees never grow where a bucket can't get to it.

I'm with MB on this one. Long gaffs with my bucks, never kicked-out. Steel inserts will put less wear on your velcro wraps. I'll be goin with the geckos real soon though, always gotta try some new...

Justin, are they factory shrp, or have the been re worked? Could be a grind angle problem?

John, That is a very good question-I bought the Kleins and the Brooks used. My Buckinghams were purchased unused, The Kleins appear to be sharpened okay but I do not know, The Brooks are so good in trees I figured the problems on the pole were actually due to the pole's condition. It is interesting to note the differences in sharpening instructions between gaff makers.-One will say to only sharpen the shank side of the gaff, the next says never the shank side but always the other 2 sides. :dizzy:

I use and like the longer gaffs. I have both but never use the shorter gaffs. I have trouble with the shorter gaffs cutting out.

How much do you weigh? And how often do you kick out?
With gear maybe 210# sometimes go for months without kicking out, not that often and when it happens its not the end of the world. :umpkin:

It you're not kicking out with short gaffs, cool. I seemed to kick out with them more than I like. With long gaffs I almost never kick out. I was refering to a weight/gaff length relationship. The more weight, the more gaff you need, IMO.
