Getting ready to do a Muffler Mod on my 550xp. I have read all the posts in the search and did not see a whole lots of pics of exactly where to mod them.
This is my first muffler mod and really not familiar with chainsaw mufflers.

One post talked about removing the screen and drilling a 3/8" hole next to the original hole. Would this be the best gain for the least increase in noise ?
This was a post by rullywowr who said it turned his 550xp into a powerhouse http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/213464.htm

Would appreciate if someone could post up a few pictures showing exactly where to drill the hole and / or remove metal. Searched youtube and coudln't find
any videos of someone doing a MM on an 550xp.

Thanks for the help

my 550xp has been muffler modded and ported by Brad, and I have a new stock cs2253 which is just like it, and I'm assuming they have the same muffler because they look the same, but I could be wrong I don't know much about cat/vs not cat mufflers.

I want to muffler mod the 2253, and copy Brads work from the 550xp, because I think it sounds perfect.

I'm not sure how useful it is but I shot a video where I started them both and revved them up a little to compare the sound of stock vs modded.

Things are uploading, I'm new to posting videos so it could take me a while to get it posted.

This is what I did and then went back cut the sides of the deflector, bent it up and removed more material between the holes and bent the deflector back down. I am not a pro, but it worked.

Here is a picture of the difference of the look from the outside, doesn't tell much outside of the deflector has been stretched up for room for more flow.

When I tear them down I'll try to take pictures of what is actually involved.

Thanks for the replies. I have the muffler off, removed the screw and slid the screen out. Now the question is what is the best way to remove part of the deflector. Do you cut it with a dremel wheel, snips or ? If you drill with a 3/8 drill bit does the new hole have to be next to the exit port which means you need to peel back the deflector even more.

If you dont have a deflector doesn't the hot exhaust come straight up to the handle ?

Here is my muffler;

Maybe cut the sides of the deflector with a dremel, fold it back, drill the 3/8 hole next to the exit port, fold it back and use JB weld to seal the sides back up, repaint with grill hi temp black ??

Welding required, just not JB.

Thanks,
That is a professional looking Muffler Mod but it more than I can handle on the first attemp. What did you make the new deflector out of ? and did you weld it to the muffler ?
What about the spark arrester screen?

I am still looking at cutting the sides of the deflector with dremel wheel, peel the deflecter back, drill a 3/8 hole next to exhaust exit, bend the deflecter back, seal the sides with JB weld, paint with high temp paint, unless anyone has a better method ?

I'd send it out. 3/8" is not near enough relief and I don't think JB Weld will last very long. Don't skimp, you've got a HQ saw there.

JB Weld would melt.

We mod those for 75.00 and that includes shipping back.

We use 24 gauge steel and the screen goes back in.

I was looking at the 3/8 hole based on the following post http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/213464.htm where he said he saw a substantial gain with minimal noise increase.

Is anyone selling a complete muffler that has been modded for the 550xp?

Oh it'll be a good bit louder. But MM's aren't meant to be quite.

I am sure there is a diminishing point of return on loudness. I do most of my work in neighborhoods and subdivisions and really don't want to get everyone wound up with excess noise. If a 3/8 hole will see a good power increase and keep the added noise down to a minimum then it would be worth it to me.

A muffler mod is new to me and have not compared it to a stock saw. It's hard to tell anything from a video.

I understand. You'll see some increase, just not it's full potential. Good sawing!

Then send your saw to Mastermind and have him port and Muf Mod your saw. You will never spend so little money for the amount of improvement.

You will be glad you did. The 550 is not a good saw to try to figure out how to do basic modifications.

There are numerous posts out there where people have been extremely pleased at the performance increase on the 550xp with a simple Muffler Mod including mcw in Australia.
I have read that it's not needed to gut the muffler making it extremely loud to see real improvement in performance. I have read a couple of posts where a 3/8 hole seemed to really kick up the performance with minimal noise increase. From what I have read the autotune compensates for the muffler mod and does not require carb adjustment.

While a fully modded saw may be nice I am just working on stage 1 which is a muffler mod and trying to do it myself. Looks like I may have to break out the Hobart 140 handler and try and weld the deflector shield if I cut it.

Thanks to everyone for their replies
