After listening to me complain and moan about the lack of practical info in TCI magazine for some time, Guy M finally challenged me to do something about it... like write your own article... Which is quite a bit harder than typing a few senteces on AS about some lame article or another.
So I took some time while vacationing in the Bahamas to write and rewrite an article on falling technique, which after some tweaking, TCI has agreed to publish, though we still need to work out the details, Date $s etc..
I'd have to call this a labor of love, cause I've got a lot of hours in this 2,100 word piece... I think Tom D.'s article was my original inspiration and Guy lit the fire... So thanks to those two and all the AS family, especially Spydie for his generous sharing of info.

Congratulations Daniel. I am also looking forward to reading it. Your knowledge on the subject is evident in your posts here.

....How about making a copy available to those that dont get TCI.
If the overseas bunch can't get it mailed for free, maybe you could post a section here. I put my Fungal Strategies review here (800 words or so) in 2 pcs and it fit ok.

Hope you sent them enough pictures--they do help tell the story, and good ones up the $$ value. Congrats on sticking it out, I'm on my jillionth rewrite for an Arborist News piece :dizzy: . Talk about looking at all the details!

But making it clear to editors helps make it clear to yourself too so it's all for the good! It'll be done in time for the August issue so I'll be open to attack from the Blue Meanie dogmatists.:blob5:

Now all the slackers here who haven't bothered to get the FREE subscription to TCI will have to do it, to keep up with the AS gang.

;) Well done Daniel ,look forward to seeing article, between this and possible MB groundman article looks like some some good reading and training sessions for a lot of companies coming up.

Write on, your authorship !

Once TCIA's layout team has their way with it, request from them a PDF of the article. The entire article and images can be sent thru e-mails, even to such faraway and exotic locales as Tasmania. It'll be the same layout as in the magazine, only without advertisements or other pieces sharing the space.

Good job, Mr. Author. If you receive payment and compare it to the time you have into it, you'll make as much as an 11 year old boy in a sweatshop in China. Keep that day job. -TM-

I'm gonna do it for the FAME!!!

That's my theory on why there is such a lack of good material in the tree rags... Anyone with enough knowledge to write an article that actually conveys something of value to the reader can make a whole lot more money going out and doing the work than writintg about it. Leaving us academic types writing up their research and knit wits telling us that we can make good money selling firewood by putting up flyers at the super market...

The other thing is that writing about this stuff is challenging.. Its not easy to put into words the details of things we've known and used for years.. Most of it is simple common sense and logic to anyone who has done it for half a life time... but putting that into words requires patience and practice.. This wouldn't have happenned for me without all the "practice" here at AS....

Still havent phoned to see if they ship it north for nothin. Any Canadians out there that have any tips on getting TCI delivered?

good work daniel, definently leaving a comfort zone most things that get published in our aussie mag the''arbor age''get scrutinized to the point where no one writes in anymore, but after reading a few of your replys and seeing a few pics on falling im confident it will be water off a ducks back!congrats cant wait to see it.

i was published while i was at Uni...well just after i left...

it was in the coleopterist after i discovered a population of Leistus rufomarginatus ( a wee black beetle) in a nature reserve.... my thesis was on deadwood habitat ecology

This is good, now when we all tear into an author for writting another crappie, no substance TCI article, he'll be hear to read our criticsm. LOL
But will the critics respond to the author's defense? In the past, AS critics have virtually dissolved when challenged to back up their criticisms.

Later this year will we see an article on the new improved Maasian tree work standards that we keep hearing should replace the "antiquated" ANSI? Maybe if everybody holds their breath....

Congrats, Daniel.

Getting published can be great for one's professional reputation. A nice thing to have in the resumé.

Have fun!

Congrats Murph.

Looking forward to reading it.
