Thank you. We have been together for almost five years, and we have a three and a half year old son together, so I kinda figured what the hell... but it was her idea.

Now that's a business plan!

If arboriculture isn't that profitable how long can selling chippers be profitable?

Dan, I should try and explain my business plan in detail to you, as your patronizing sarcastic remarks obviously show you think my plan is worthless.
I should, but I can't be bothered, as your not worth the effort.

Read the thread title - Got any plans? not - run down other peoples plans.
Like I always say, keep your mouth shut and let everyone think your an idiot, instead of opening your mouth and confirming it.

Every business will need customers, or who will you sell your product or service to??? Possible suggestion, selling drugs? :p

Those cutomers can be an even bigger pain in the rear than the ones I deal with now. But those days are behind me, now I stick to selling tree care :p

I've been trying to cut down on overheads and, more importantly, employees. The ideal number is zero. Ideally, I'd like to fill my year with a solo activity like hedgelaying, and maybe sub for someone else, but it's getting hard to do the solo stuff. I get a lot of work from councils, who don't let you work on your own, so I have to employ a dummy to watch me. I train them up, so half the work gets done cf. when I'm on my own, but I pay them for a day, then when they think they know it all they nick off to do it for themselves (they think!)..or, when they think they've got you over a barrel, they start demanding more and more.

Sorry for the rant, got the normal employee problems when things get busy.

No, don't be sorry for the rant. Thats exactly the problem with employee/apprentice climbers.

I am about 50% sub contracting, 40% my own jobs, and 10% split jobs right now. My new work truck will be ready for next season, so i'm going to start focussing more on my own jobs. I think 25% sub contracting would be about right. Some of the other tree companies i work for are relly starting to wear on my nerves.

Like Big Al the other day wants me to climb this UGLY dead ash tree, "No listen to me" he says "All you have to do is go up to that first crotch..." he started priming me for this thing at lunch "Theres a dead ash behind my garage i wanna get down." "Oh, its not to bad." and on and on all afternoon, Like its no big deal, just a little no-cost ad on to wrap up the day with. i kept tellin him "Pay Jon what you owe him and getta a bucket over here, I'm not climbing that thing." Finally i got mad "No, You listen to me! That f#@ckin tree is dangerous and I'm not climbing it!"

So Al gets all puffy "Fine, I'll cut it myself." so he grabs a saw, goes over and cuts a few saplings out of the way, looks up at this tree and probably thinks something like 'gee, that tree looks dangerous, maybe i wont cut it today.' And walks away, preserving his life for another few minutes.

So it goes, its tough to make money, i guess thats why we get paid for it.

I think i'm going to send some pics to hollywood, maybe they'll let me be a big movie star. then i can get a personal trainer, and work out in a gym like normal people, and buy a nice sail boat, with an exotic swedish crew :)

My frend Kevin just left one of the co's i sub for, he was the foreman over there (mostly a firewood yard). Anyway, he's a great ground guy except he refuses to wear a hard hat  So maybe next season i'll get him as a semi-perminant ground guy. Right now i am employeeless. There is a pretty good labor pool around here, so its not to hard to find a helper if i need someone.

whats a "stone"?

PPS Yeah, I'm with dark, great topic RC.
