I was prepping for a job I've got to do tomorrow (only time I can do it with the client there and he wants to be there) and thought about blowing out all of my air filters, touching up a couple of chains and going ahead and filling up so I could get right to work in the morning. Then I remembered I can do it all with a handsaw and polesaw. I will still bring the 200 and 260 just in case I run into something light that needs to be cut or the neighbor wants something done but it is kind of nice to not have to listen to the racket for a change and I'm sure the neighbors will appreciate the quiet of the handsaw with Sunday morning coming down. I know I'll enjoy the peace and quiet. :)

that is a nice change of pace. enjoy it!. Happens every once in awile no noise, except for maybe a blower and chipper on cleanup for a few mins. Will be a peaceful day for you!

I did the same thing today. Dead wooding an old oak. Its not just the noise either I think its something about the stress level too. No matter how much you do it, your heart rate will still go up once you start with the chainsaw in a tree, which you dont get with a handsaw. I think I finished half my dead wooding just trying to get my lines in the crotch I wanted but it was nice and peaceful once I got up. Then my wife called me on the cell phone and that all ended.

Tis beautiful when you can do it. I had a mix today, did some volunteer trail clearing with my two sons. Some hand pruning, some with brush axe.. and we did pull out the 200T and 260 for some of the work.

So true!! And at times if only small limb clearing a good handsaw is about as fast.

Yeah someone else said it before but, with a good hand saw you could have even a decent size limb down before the saw is unclipped started and cutting.

Don't forget the snips for the small stuff! I love spending all day up in the canopy of a big old tree cleaning it out. I have a 22" Fanno for deadwood and a small 13" Corona with the red and black rubber handle in a two blade holster. Works great and beats the noise of a chainsaw any day of the week!

Now lets see you notch and backcut a 40"+ DBH standing oak with a misery whip! That will really make you appreciate a chainsaw, vintage or modern!

I love my telescopic polesaw (hotstick) by hastings.

I love the quiet, and I love the workout.

One of these days I'm going to figure out how to get a Silky blade working off the end of it.

Interesting thread...I've been working at my father's house for a few weekends and still trying to keep peace with the neighbors. I was brushing out some limbs using loppers and hand saws and I was wondering if anyone else did the same. I figure it's quieter and safer. We burn so anything too big for the loppers gets burned and things just tend to go a little neater and calmer when you're not trying to cut 3/4" branches with a saw.

But that's not the point...Sometimes there are trees where a handsaw is all that's needed.
I'm in the handsaw camp...till the chainsaw is needed!

Guys used to fire up a saw at the chipper when something wouldn't go in the old chuck and duck till I bought a silky folding saw. Then it was always pass the silky.

Now with the vermeer 1400 we need the chainsaw if something is not going, but a good silky handsaw is still indispensible.

I think you missed the point of the thread. I love my chainsaws. But my point and I believe the point of the thread was that its really enjoyable sometimes to up a tree with just yourself and a handsaw. Take in the scenery, its almost Zen like. I got down out of the tree the other day and felt an urge to eat tofu and do yogo. Okay not really but it is a nice change.

I start any new climber that works for me with a handsaw. It keeps them out of trouble. Fast don't always necessarily when the race. Believe me I run the big saws when I need to, that's my bread and butter but it's nice to do a light Sunday prune with a handsaw for a change. I'll enjoy it. I'm gone guys catch you laterz.

I agree, Its nice to do some pruning without noise, smoke and the extra weight and bulk of a chainsaw. I always think its cool to work with minimal equipment. Rope, saddle and handsaw. Skip the noisy stuff...... Mike

some times If I work on a saturday or Sunday, I will make a bit of noise on purpose. Brings the neighbors outside and lets them see whats going on. sometimes a nosey neighbor fills the day out with another job.:)
