when i firtst looked at u pic.. i thot u was kidding.. look like the tried to saw a tree or 2 with the side of his truck..:)

Gypo, that's a good lookin' race chain on that 385. Big gullets, dog-boned,...narrow kerf?

Well the only beech that grows here in God's backyard is blue beech, or muscle wood...and I never saw one bigger than about 5". I ain't never seen no apple tree bigger than about 6-7" either...fungus gets in frost cracks, decays the stem, and they blow over in the wind.

The color and shape of the blocks from the end looks like red elm, maybe a tree killed by beaver flooding, because I didn't see a lot of spalt streaks indicating disease and natural death. The number of tight knots and limbs troubles me, however.

I guess I dunno.

I say 385 for the saw.

It's the tight knots, the coloring, and some of the odd cross sections that got me thinking apple. If they're left to grow without pruning, they can get that big. My next guess would be cherry. I dunno, I just think its some kind of overgrown fruit tree.

Nice f250, btw.

There are two things that make me think it's Beech, however slight possibility of Sugar Maple, Beech usually has a larger heart.
#1 Thin grey bark
#2 It looks like it was cut on a warmer day as the wood is opaque, bleeding sap into the wood.
Cherry would have white sapwood and red heartwood.
Anyway, you won't hear back from Heff any time soon . That is, until he gets into the beverages. He only comes out when he drinks his Gin.

John, it seems you have nothing better to do than drag your sorry a__ out of bed at noon and take shots at us hard-workin stiffs. Laugh it up.

A buddy of mine (and yours) is the owner of the big load of beech. And the 385 XPG. He says you know him from your excursion to Bangor a few ago. And it's not big Harold.

I'd wanted to guess beech specifically for the log end in the lower left corner which has so quickly and successfully engulfed the triple stems, but the combination of saw I wanted to pick and beech had already been chosen, so I went with cherry just because it might have been.  Factored in was since the saw was so easily identified I felt the wood must be the reason for the "trick question" feel of the challenge.

Congratulations, Roger.  I might have been able to beat you to it if I hadn't had to fetch the image to a server and crop it first -- dang modem here...

Glen

(if it had been cherry, the owner's work wouldn't have so much just begun)
