there was a thorough thread on the buzz about it. if you google the term it should find something for you. gypo logger. apparently used on the west coast. I actually heard a very learned tree person refere to a couple fellows as gypo with a capital G on Monday at a seminar (not in the seminar, chatting with a couple guys over coffee). go figure

copy of my post from a few months ago on another site:

"link for sketch of gypo logger - scroll to bottom of screen : http://www.eldonolin.com/Ink_sketches.htm

see here for a translation of the word ;gypo : http://home.att.net/~lassen.logger/terms-g.htm

and for a synosis, this is the information found at : http://forestry.about.com/library/glossary/blforglg.htm

" GYPPO (gypo) -Independent logger who usually runs small-scale logging operation.
-a small, independent sawmill or other wood related operation.
-personnel paid on piecework basis, such as a "gyppo" car loader or a "gyppo" trucker?

--------------------
CHT, ISA "

The usage I'm familiar with is that of contract labor paid by the piece/boardfoot. In the case of Butch- As a contract climber, paid for performance regardless of hours-gypoclimber works. Personallly, I'd offer him about $20 per tree. After he prunes 3 crabapples I'll lead him around back to the 6 foot dbh Cottonwood.:p

aye here they are....eh....how should i word this....eh .........scum.

travellers gone bad.....drive around set up camp and begin to rip everyone off. normally found camped next to big roundabouts up here.

liked the story that a group of them got together and bought a field then set up camp and demanded that the council provided them with services.....

not that im saying you lot fall into the same catagory.

jamie

Gypo in the Army referred to the state of ones intestinals as well;
ie "I've got Gypo gut" mean one had the sh*ts. Believe it was in reference to Egypt where everyone got sick when we were there in the 1950s or perhaps as below, traveller's illness.

Jamie, I think over here we call them Gypsy's although I think they are pretty few and far between these days.

thats cos they left for england jimmy.
got no end of the scum over here......insult most definetly intended

I,m not toatally positive, but I beleive the term came about after the labor wars early on in the west those that didnt side with the unions or large companies and logged independently were refered to a Gypo outfits and at the time depending on who was saying it it could be considered derogatory. The large timber companies have done a real good job of eliminating small loggers "gyppo folks" There was a time when the average guy capable of hard work could get a timber sale out here, now thats not really an option, An old song had a line Who's side are you on? I'm on my side so maybe I have some Gyppo blood too.

how very wrong you are infact there are several million gypsies [roma] in the USA...they are a race of people who migrated from northwest india around about 1400 ad..they moved right through europe as far as you can go all the way to the UK.some settled along the way in the differant countrys they travelled through, they can be found in most countrys from india to ireland.some even branched off into isreal ,gulf states and north africa..the gypsies [roma] found in australia,nz,usa ,canada migrated like the rest of the europeans who settled in these countrys and at about the same time..

the word gypsie is a name falsley given to the roma [correct name] people by the english who thought they were gytians [old english for egyptian]..the word gypo [latter day engish derogaratory name] would get you a good beating if used around them how ever most [roma] do not take the word gypsie to be offensive

i believe the way MB and gypologger to use the word is that like gypsies they work for who ever so to speak, like a gypsie they will go where ever the work is..see a gypsie won't starve he'll go where ever to get work 'and if that fails they will resort to theft.unfortunatly some have become very good at theft and have found it a lot more profitable than work..giving the rest a bad name..[gypo logger most definatly refers to a logger who travels were ever for work..an itinerant worker]

gypsies as jamie put it do have a bad reputation..if you had been treated as cheap labour marginalised from society ,sent to australia and the caribean to work as convicts/slaves for no reason other than being a gypsie, killed in huge numbers in hitlers gas chamebers ,hung for being a gypsie yes 13 where hung in england for being a gypsies..enslaved in Romania up untill the 1800s etc etc etc you might not be to fond of the settled community ..just like a goodmany blacks still carry chips on there shoulders so do a lot of gypsies

now the gypsies when they moved to the low countrys [Belguim holland] and the uk they mixed and inter married with another group called travellers[itinerant tradesman ethnicly no differant from the settled folk] these were usualy itinerant tradsmen ie black smiths ,basket weavers, horse dealers, fair ground people etc and because the words roma or gypsie carried so much of a stigma they the uk gypsies called themselves 'travellers'

want to no more www.patrin.com ...how do i know so much ,like they say it takes one to know one :D

ps the roma/gypsies are the biggest worldwide minority with estimated population of over 16 million

and the reason they moved from india ,because of war muslims v hindus..they were hindus and had to flee from the moghuls ,shah jahan etc

We been Gypped!

i think the gypsy, wanderer with maybe a teasing, gritty tain't of good times is what is meant by our 2 resident gypos; in good humor, and romantisized virgn , i mean....

i think the imagery even goes better with the whole Loisiana Location as a natural location of such a wandering climber as in MB's site. The old world pictures help too; hard working wanderers; fools for good time!

Some hard guys; workin hard, playin hard, luvvin hard; on the road like a rock and roll star living out of a suitcase.

Or, something like that
:alien:
