Had some time today to tear into the 394`s, one has a broken brake band the other is good to go. Took the bad one off and this is what I found, made a tool up to compress the spring back in place. This works with the handle off, with the handle on, with the brake spring in place and the spring out with little effort. I could hold the cover with my left hand easily but bolted it down with a couple of lag bolt type screws to male it even easier. Hope this helps.

Hardest repair ever is seeming to be true for me also. I am not having trouble with the large spring that activates the break but the one that goes inside the hand guard. I cant for the life of me seem to be able to see how this part goes back together. any one out here have trouble with this area?

Bought a 288 with a broken band,, after breaking two of the finger springs am now awaiting a third,,, just left the entire cover at the shop as they guy said he would put it together for me,,, I dont usually get stumped,,, ARRGGG

Ive done a few on 394's without to much trouble. It did involve 1 foot on the cover to stop it moving tho and a small tyre lever compressing the spring in place.
