This may not work for you , but over the past almost 40 years of sawing, this is what I've found works best for me. FWIW, my guidelines are as follows: Small saws (30cc & 40cc class) - 12-14' bar with 3/8 picco, .043 or .050ga chain. Medium saws ( 50cc class) - 16-18" bar with .325 chain. Medium/Large saws (60cc class) - 18-20" 3/8 chain. Note: I've used a 24" bar and it works OK, but prefer the 20". Large saws (70cc +) - 20" and up bar with 3/8, .050 or .058ga chain. I try to use the shortest bar on the smallest(lightest) saw I can get away with. I always bring the big saw just in case, but it doesn't break my heart if I don't have to drag that thing around all day.
